Lovers of jazz fusion and devotees of the possibilities of the electric bass have reason to thank the heavens for the arrival of THUNDER. A collaboration between three of the genre's reigning heavyweights-Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, and Victor Wooten-THUNDER offers up a cornucopia of low-end sonic playfulness and mastery. With tracks that range from orchestral (opener "Maestros de Las Frencuencias Bajas) to moody, spaghetti-western film music ("Los Tres Hermanos"), the album mixes jazz, funk, ambient, light jazz, and classical elements. Clarke, Miller, and Wooten weave their instruments around each other, creating plenty of varied interplay, and making this enjoyable set a bass-lover's dream.

Keyboardist Jeff Lorber was one of the performers who defined the smoother side of jazz's fusion sector in the 1980s. Lorber is still at it, refining his melodious, easygoing style in the company of ace musicians and adding new ingredients. Thanks to guitarist Paul Jackson Jr., Lorber works some of the classic `60s/'70s soul-jazz style into the mix, and, on the other side, guest saxophonist Gerald Albright is a notable emissary from the seductive Quiet Storm front. While not a major departure from his previous discs, HEARD THAT should please longtime fans and perhaps attract a few new ones.

Tela's NOW OR NEVER is distinguished by the sophistication of it's production and the advanced conceptualism at work throughout its smoothly-flowing 20 (!) cuts. The range of musical styles drawn on for the tracks is remarkable; everything from funk and R&B to pop and even classical music is employed here. There's a grandness to the themes here, which raise the typical gangsta concerns to an almost mythical level. This grandiose approach doesn't mean that there's any immediacy or viscerality sacrificed on NOW OR NEVER, though--it resonates like the most street-credible hop-hop. Listening to what will surely be viewed as Tela's masterwork, the listener is transported into an almost cinematic experience; think of NOW OR NEVER as the greatest hip-hop film you never saw.
