Bonus CD Included 1. There's No Angel On My Shoulder 2. Who Wants To Ride This Train Kendel Carson is a fiddler and singer who plays with the excellent Canadian folk-rock outfit the Paperboys. For her solo debut, she slips into a languorous country-rock mode, spending most of her time maintaining a simmering slow-to-midtempo groove and delivering songs (mostly written by producer and guitarist Chip Taylor) that deal with fairly predictable topics in a way that manages to sound consistently fresh without being particularly unusual or innovative. The album's high point is the quietly spectacular "Gold in the Hills (Of Saltery Bay)," a moody rumination on love gone right; almost equally fine is the sad and lovely "Ribbons & Bows," one of two songs on which Carson gets co-writer credit. Elsewhere, the miserable lyrical theme of "Child All Over Again" is given a strangely jaunty setting, and "Run to the Middle of the Mornin'" burns brightly at midtempo. Two of the album's snottier tracks, "I Like Trucks" and "I Certainly Know Why" both sound as if they were recorded in a bar full of slightly drunk young women, and both are the better for it. One question: why does a 38-minute-long disc come packaged with a "bonus disc" that contains two additional songs, for a total running time of about 45 minutes? It's a mystery. Never an artist known to push himself harder than necessary, 2005's Fair and Square was John Prine's first album in five years, and his first set dominated by new material since 1995's Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings (a live album, a set of covers and a collection of new recordings of older material helped fill the gap). Of course, Prine had ...
| | Pilgrim: A Celebration Of Kris Kristofferson CD (2006)
Rearview Mirror Tears
$14.59 Since his first appearances in the late 1960s, Kris Kristofferson has been quietly achieving legendary status as a songwriter and performer, earning the admiration of the listening public and fellow musicians alike. PILGRIM: A CELEBRATION OF KRIS KRISTOFFERSON gives that admiration a formal public showing in the form of a tribute album featuring the likes of Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Gretchen Wilson, Randy Scruggs, and others. As the author of "For the Good Times," "Sunday Morning Coming Down," and "Me and Bobby McGee," Kristofferson has a fair number of iconic classics to his name, but the real surprise of PILGRIM is how the guest artists breathe new life into the tunes. Rosanne Cash's plaintive version of "Lovin' Him Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again)" and Willie Nelson's breezy take on "The Legend" are only two of the album's many lovely standouts. The success of a tribute album is fully dependent on the contributors' ability to put their egos aside and kneel at the altar of the artist being feted. The crew ...
| | Bill Kirchen Hammer Of The Honky-Tonk Gods CD (2006)
Rearview Mirror Tears
$14.59 Personnel: Sarah Carroll, Phil McCleod, Suzannah Espie, Trish Anderson (cello); Austin DeLone (keyboards, background vocals); Robert Trehern (drum); Nick Lowe (background vocals); Paul Riley. Additional personnel: Chris Gaffney, Dave Gonzales (vocals); Cindy Cashdollar (steel guitar); Danny Levin (fiddle). The title cut of Bill Kirchen's seventh solo album, Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods, is a loving tribute to the Fender Telecaster, the axe that's been Kirchen's instrument of choice since he started picking with Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen in 1967, but while there's plenty of fine guitar work on this album (which from Kirchen should go without saying), this isn't the straight-ahead honky tonk session you might expect given Kirchen's back catalog. While the title cut and "Get a Little Goner" would sound great pouring out of any beer joint's jukebox, Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods is one of Kirchen's most eclectic sets to date, with the bandleader demonstrating his skills on the acoustic swing of "One More Day," offering up a slow and slinky cover of "Devil with a Blue Dress ...
