| | Poncho Sanchez Latin Soul CD (1999)
Andando songs
$7.89 Recorded live at The Conga Room, Los Angeles, California; Yoshi's Nightspot, Oakland, California between April and July 1999. Includes liner notes by Remo D. Belli & Edward James Olmos.
LATIN SOUL won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Performance.
LATIN SOUL won the 2001 Billboard Latin Award for Latin Jazz Album of the Year.
Pancho Sanchez strides onto the stage with the same kind of confidence as band leaders like Juan Formell (Van Van, Cuba,) but Pancho is older, wiser and more philosophical than many of his Latin counterparts. This album consists of live recordings taken from several venues, and it makes you wonder just why so many other groups have had to revert to studio sessions to polish up their sound. Not Pancho. Spectacular conga and brass lines converge on the explosive opener, "El Conguero." This awesome intro is followed by a mean and clean combination of solo and chorus acts by the various metallic members of the band. Down the line, one is reminded of Carlos ...

| | Jennifer Lopez Como Ama Una Mujer CD (2007)
Andando CD music
$9.59 When pop diva Jennifer Lopez hit a slump in both her acting and singing careers around 2005's REBIRTH, the New York City-born-and-bred superstar wisely took some time out of the spotlight with her husband, fellow performer Marc Anthony. Issued in '07, COMO AMA UNA MUJER not only marks a period of renewed activity for J. Lo (see also the films EL CANANTE, co-starring Anthony, and BORDERTOWN), it stands out as her first full Spanish-language album. This return to her Latin roots suits Lopez well, as she warmly embraces her Puerto Rican heritage without abandoning her keen pop sensibility. With top-notch production by Anthony, lauded Colombian musician Julio Reyes Copello, and others, MUJER fully showcases J. Lo's range, as string-laden ballads ("Me Haces Falta," "Tu") are balanced out by energetic dance tracks, most notably the dramatic lead single ...
| | Robert Cray Take Your Shoes Off CD (1999)
Andando music CDs
$13.49 TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF finds Robert Cray picking up the Memphis soul thread that infused so much of 1997's SWEET POTATO PIE. Joined by the always-reliable Memphis Horns, Cray delivers another masterful batch of tunes that are as much a tip of the hat to Stax as they are to Chess. The bluesman's creamy vocals fall somewhere between Sam Cooke and Otis Redding and are particularly effective on the brassy "24-7 Man" and the pleading "Let Me Know." The R&B map is well traversed with Jim Pugh's flickering organ licks and Steve Jordan's solid playing (turning "It's All Gone" into a lost Hi track), while the strolling tempo on "There's Nothing Wrong" brings to mind Motown's finer moments.
As always, the talented guitarist's choice of covers is an interesting mix. Willie Dixon's "Tollin' Bells" is presented with brushed drums and a reverberating chord that eerily replicates the song's title. Most interesting is a reading of Solomon Burke's "Won't You Give Him (One More Chance)" that finds Cray being joined by Cajun accordionist Jo-El Sonnier on an arrangement that Taj Mahal might have suggested.
Rolling Stone (5/27/99, pp.63-64) - 3 1/2 Stars (out of 5) - "...this is a slow-burning soul record - and one of the most focused of Cray's twenty-five year career..."
Q (5/99, p.104) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...there are moments...incisive solo...punchy soul feel...cajun touches and funky riffs...which turn this into a thoroughly enjoyable album..."
Melody Maker (5/1/99, p.36) - 4 stars (out of 5) - "...Think Al Green, Stax and a time before machines ruled the world. Lovely."
Living Blues (7-8/99, p.52) - "...his strongest ...

$14.79 It's been 10 years since Illustrate first stepped on the scene. From his debut release in 1996, "Summons of a Soldier," to his newest project, "Chronicles of Life," his mission has never changed. He still speaks Christ to the hip hop culture. He speaks on life hardships and trials as well as the victory of overcoming each obstacle. In an industry, still filled with artists that cling to the thug and pimp personas, Illustrate still ...
