Graig Markel creates attractive if deliberately unexciting music on his solo release Via Novella. Via Novella CD music At tempos ranging from slow to slower, the tracks begin with a deliberately strummed acoustic guitar, augmented by more stringed instruments, including overdubbed electric guitar, cello, and lap steel guitar, all played by Markel, before he begins to sing in a heavily processed, becalmed voice, repeating reflective, poetic lyrics. This is music in the style of English eccentrics like Syd Barrett and Nick Drake, coming from a Seattle musician, but no less appealing for that. ~ William Ruhlmann

Via Novella music CDs. There's a certain vastness of space in Kathleen Edwards's country-pop compositions, a quietude that seems to brew only north of the U.S.-Canadian border. The Toronto singer-songwriter's 2000 debut, FAILER, plays like a slightly peppier HARVEST MOON with a more honeyed voice. She sells sadness sweetly, whether bitterly tearing down an urban outlaw ("Six O'Clock News"), lamenting the crazed nature of the music game ("One More Song the Radio Won't Like"), or throwing in the towel on an exhausting love ("Hockey Skates").
