Dntel is the name for the solo project headed up by Jimmy Tamborello, a tunesmith, electronics whiz, and one-man band who makes a startlingly fresh and appealing statement on DUMB LUCK. Like a lot of indie electronica releases, DUMB LUCK is thick with glitchy, skittering beats, but it's Tamborello's sharp songwriting that glues the fractured sonic-scape together. Guest vocals from some of indie rock's elite, including Death Cab for Cutie's Benjamin Gibbard, Jenny Lewis, and Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst, heighten the profile of this already lovely and appealing pop-electronica set.
Dntel: Jimmy Tamborello (vocals).
Personnel: Sonya Westcott, Ed Droste , Mia Doi Todd, Andrew Broder, Conor Oberst (vocals); Paul Larson, Jenny Lewis (guitar); James A. Tamborello (saxophone); Markus Acher, Valerie Trebeljahr (synthesizer); Grant Olsen (glockenspiel); Jennifer Gunst, Christopher Gunst (bass instrument); Scott Blue, Chris Hathwell (drums); Morgan Nagler (background vocals).
Alternative Press (p.161) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Sounding quite rich and organic for a record made mostly from computers, it's clear Tamborello has a knack for melding man and machine." CMJ (p.36) - "[A] collection of intricate beats, yearning guitars and warm vocal performances..." Dumb Luck Review

| | Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass CD (2006)
Dumb Luck
$9.95 With 2006's cheekily titled I AM NOT AFRAID OF YOU AND I WILL BEAT YOUR ASS, the beloved indie-rock trio Yo La Tengo presents a dynamic set of songs that echo the band's past, while notably downplaying the soporific atmospherics of preceding discs (the lauded AND THEN NOTHING and SUMMER SUN). The New Jersey-based group opens with "Pass the Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind," a feedback-drenched guitar workout anchored by pulsing, insistent rhythms, which is followed by the jaunty "Beanbag Chair," a charming pop ditty that percolates under Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley's breezy vocals. Other highlights of this eclectic record include the beautifully ...
| | Battles Mirrored CD (2007)
Dumb Luck
$11.89 If modern day indie music appears to consist of an endless queue of groups that are either bland emo retreads or glitzy disco punkers, it is then that much more refreshing to encounter a band like Battles. With a lineage that consists of some of indie rock's most accomplished musicians, Battles is a veritable neo-prog supergroup, though one that embraces the possibilities of technology used in tandem with instrumental virtuosity.
MIRRORED, the band's debut full-length makes its intent clear from the onset--to ingest 50 years of rock history and regurgitate it as fractilized micro-symphonies. Rhythms bounce whimsically from motorik krautrock beats to glammed up T. Rex shuffles; such stop-on-a-dime surprises seem to be offered up at every turn. Tyondai Braxton's ...
| | National Boxer CD (2007)
Dumb Luck
$9.89 And while his presence isn't immediately apparent, indie hero Sufjan Stevens contributes piano to two tracks ("Racing Like a Pro" and "Ada"), adding to the National's increasingly expansive aesthetic, which also incorporates strings and horns. Though BOXER is more subdued than ALLIGATOR, it will likely appeal to those won over by the earlier outing.
On 2007's BOXER, the National's second full-length album for the venerable Beggars Banquet label, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock act follows up the lauded ...
| | Spoon Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga CD (2007)
Dumb Luck
$12.95 By 2007 Spoon had grown into one of the most quietly inventive and accomplished outfits in rock. Like 2005's excellent GIMME FICTION, GA GA GA GA GA is a winning combination of hook-heavy pop and post-punk angles driven by a unique piano-guitar interplay and singer Britt Daniels's expressive vocals. But Spoon's secret ingredient is their spare, often brilliant arrangements. Like a Japanese calligrapher drawing on rice paper, Spoon applies minimal lines and shading to make each song a meticulous pop universe full of texture and subtlety.
The ephemeral and appropriately haunting "The Ghost of You Lingers" is a fine example; its radically pared-down piano motif and elliptical melody sound like a cross between Terry Riley and Paul McCartney. "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb" employs a bouncy Motown groove and horns, proving Spoon as adept at driving grooves as atmospheric pop, a fact echoed in "The Underdog," one of the album's standout tracks. Those accustomed to rock's usual bombast might dismiss GA ...
| | Jens Lekman Night Falls Over Kortedala CD (2007)
Dumb Luck
$12.09 NIGHT FALLS is less lo-fi than the artist's previous work; in fact, the production is downright lush, featuring full-bodied arrangements that drip pop sunshine a la Burt Bacharach. But the central focus is Lekman's songs, which are as quaint, moving, pitch-perfect, and beautifully crafted as anything he's done.
In addition to being one of the best albums of 2005, the Secretly Canadian compilation OH YOU'RE SO SILENT JENS proved Swedish singer-songwriter Jens Lekman to be an artist of unusual ...

$7.29 | | Punk-O-Rama 9 CD (2004) Bonus DVD
Dumb Luck
$6.29 PUNK-O-RAMA VOL. 9 follows its predecessors by packing plenty of killer songs into one specially priced collection. Epitaph Records major domo Brett Gurewitz kicks the disc off with "Social Suicide," an energetic track from his band Bad Religion's 2004 effort, THE EMPIRE STRIKES FIRST. As always, PUNK-O-RAMA serves as a guided tour through much of Epitaph's roster. Rancid layers Farfisa organ onto "Tropical London," Pennywise charges through the fast-paced "Now I Know," ...
