Reissued, re-mastered, and re-sequenced for the 21st century, Herb Alpert's 1979 album RISE still has the big hair and polyester feel of the early '80s, though club remixes of two of the cuts, "Rotation" and "Aranjuez (Mon Amour)," update the producer/trumpeter's sound for a new audience, with the latter even adding trendy Arabic cadences. The title cut, with its laconic, laid-back feel and insistent bass riff, was also the backing track for the Notorious B.I.G.'s 1990s hit "Hypnotize." The album marked a triumphant comeback for Alpert, its sophisticated, upscale production blending his signature trumpet flourishes with contemporary touches such as massed synthesizers, disco beats, and orchestral backing.

 Herb Alpert RISEs Again!
After the unmatched international success of his Tijuana Brass sound, Herb Alpert had some down time. His label, A&M Records, had grown into the world's largest independent record label since its founding with partner Jerry Moss in 1962. The success of RISE the single caused RISE the album to be created. The RISE album became Herb's big career comeback and was the start of his solo recording career. Besides the significance of this, RISE is a great album. And this re-issue with two bonus tracks makes it all the better. Even if you bought the album when it was first released, this remastered version, with an intro from Herb and newly written liner notes, is well worth you adding it to your collection!

 A desert Island Disc
I am a Herb Alpertophile and am excited by this pivotal CD being reissued in the Digipac format with new liner notes and a couple of bonus tracks. It sounds as fresh as it did when I bought it as a young teen. The new version of Rotation is just as good as the original but with all the newer electronica sounds thrown in with Herb's new trumpet work. The new dance mix of Aranjuez is good as well but more similar to the original. Its hard to imagine anyone really not liking the variety of good music on this CD. Hopefully all of Herb's solo work will follow this release...maybe even his work with Hugh Masekela!?

I have been waiting for this cd to be issued for years (out of circulation). I do have the vinyl version, Alpert at his best with great support players. Critically acclaimed, all tracks are to be enjoyed over and over. It doesn't get better, a collector's cd!
