Michael Buble ranks among the best of the contemporary crooners working in a classic pop-vocal style, and his 2007 album, CALL ME IRRESPONSIBLE, further refines his suave, smooth style. With its finger-snapping big band arrangements, the album has its share of homage to Frank and Dino, both obvious cornerstones of Buble's music. But this isn't merely a retro exercise; the tunes, the production, and the overall feel are decidedly contemporary.
Stylistically adventurous versions of songs by Eric Clapton, Leonard Cohen, and Willie Nelson keep things lively, while "Everything," a Buble original, is one of the album's highlights. Still, cuts like the lead-off track ("The Best Is Yet to Come") and the old chestnut "I've Got the World on a String" will give listeners looking for some elegant, back-in-the-day pizzazz exactly that.

Down Beat (p.76) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "This CD is best when Buble wraps himself around the brass and reeds of a straight-up big band....John Hamilton and David Foster also provide a few high spots." JazzTimes (p.91) - "[Buble] suggests the caramel-smooth creaminess of Steve Lawrence, the sensual warmth of Vic Damone, the swingin' bravura of Dean Martin and the boyish showmanship of Wayne Newton." Michael Buble: Respecting the Past in the Present I've always loved singers...the ones you never forget, like Sinatra, Bennett, with that big band sound. Michael's keepin' that alive, but in a very modern way. He's a very versatile guy, going from brash up-tempo big-band arrangements to beautiful ballads. I keep listening to this album over and over...and it never gets old. It's fresh, hip, and a great tribute to the greats who inspire Michael...and he's returning the favor. Amazing... Buble Does It Again. Amazing cd, with beautiful renditions on classic songs. I love the duet with Boys 2 Men on "Comin' Home Baby". I haven't heard anything from Boys 2 Men in a long time, so it was refreshing to hear them team up Michael Buble for an amazing song. This cd is top notch... Everyone should pick it up anyway they can!!! Submitted by Ccladonia (Toronto, ON, Canada.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

Call Me Irresponsible
$13.15 EARTH OMEN is a full-length release by '60s Detroit rockers, Frijid Pink, including "Miss Evil" and "Train Woman."
Two albums after their Top Ten 1970 hit single, "House of the Rising Sun," this band is almost like Michael Tegza's version of Love Craft when they could've gone in a Blue Cheer direction and expanded their horizons. It's not that there is no compelling music on Earth Omen. The title track, with a classy, ecological chorus, is torpedoed by hokey lyrics in the verse. "Sailor" isn't bad either, and the musicianship goes from good to very good, while the cover concept, featuring frozen humans on the front and a photo negative of the five bandmembers on the back, goes hand in hand with the album's themes. This MGM-distributed Lion records release is a rather interesting study in a band that should have had a couple of more laps around the brass ring, if not being able to grab it one more time. "Lazy Day" has mandolin-like guitar strummings from Craig Webb, more solid vocals covering ecology themes, and something that would be inviting on FM radio in the middle of the night concluding side one. "Eternal Dream" is quiet Black Sabbath without Ozzy Osborne, like "Changes" off of Black Sabbath, Vol. 4, and the song is ...
