| | Damned Black Album CDs (1980) Deluxe Edition
Bootleg Vinyl Archive, Vol. 1 CD music
$17.19 The fact that one of its songs is called "Hit or Miss" is quite appropriate for the double-vinyl Black Album; while not perfect, it's definitely got some high points on it. Given the intentionally parodic reference to the Beatles' own two-disc sprawler, perhaps the semi-schizophrenia is perfectly intentional. Some of the numbers show the band following their original punk vein, but by this point the four (joined here by a new bassist, Paul Gray) were leaving straight, three-chord thrash to the cul-de-sac revivalists. The album begins with a Damned classic, "Wait for the Blackout," a dramatic psych/punk surge infected with Vanian's glorious croon, celebrating the joys of the night while steering clear of overtly-serious goth affectations. After that, things start to vary, but tracks of note are still thick on the ground, including "Lively Arts," a nicely barbed take on culture with some harpsichord to match, and the goofy but still enjoyable "Drinking About My Baby." Regardless, things get a bit restful at points, and while Vanian often steps forward to continue carrying it along, sometimes even the band isn't happy with the results. "History of the World (Part One)" has always carried the credit "overproduced ...
| | Killing Joke Hosannas From The Basement Of Hell CD (2006)
Bootleg Vinyl Archive, Vol. 1 music CDs
$13.19 The studio follow-up to Killing Joke's fierce 2003 self-titled comeback album, HOSANNAS FROM THE BASEMENTS OF HELL finds the veteran U.K. industrial-rock ensemble returning to its early-1980s "primitive" sound, as clearly announced on the surging opener, "This Tribal Antidote," which showcases Geordie Walker's wire-tight guitar riffs. Although this record doesn't benefit from the rhythmic attack of Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), a guest on the aforementioned outing, drummer Ben Calvert proves to be a worthy successor, as revealed on the pummeling title track, which also shines the spotlight on frontman Jaz Coleman, who mixes guttural screams with ...

| | Ex Starters Alternators CD (1998)
Bootleg Vinyl Archive, Vol. 1 music CDs
$13.05 I first heard of this fiery, powerful Dutch anarchist quintet more than a decade ago, when no less than the hard-to-impress Fugazi folks were dropping the band's name in interviews (without prodding). Somehow, the Ex has remained Amsterdam's best-kept secret over here all those years since, despite a plethora of LPs, all with great lyrics. If I have counted correctly, this is their 16th and, like its predecessors, it's a throat-grabbing, post-punk smacker that also lets in the more hushed, unsettling underbelly of the genre. Perhaps the Netherlands isn't the rad-hip place of origin for today's cognoscenti gazing past the lowlands for Scandinavia. But the members of the Ex don't care. They just keep pumping out the frightening rhythms, so terse and vicious that they bring back ...

| | Saxon Masters Of Rock CD (2007)
Bootleg Vinyl Archive, Vol. 1 album
$9.95 MASTERS OF ROCK - BEST - OF collects 15 tracks by the NWOBHM act.
There have been countless anthology and collection releases over the years of the oft-overlooked New Wave of British Heavy Metal outfit Saxon. Although some of their peers would soon leave them in the dust sniffing their fumes, Saxon did issue a handful of albums during the early '80s that stood up to the early releases of their local peers. And it's this exact era of the band that is showcased on the compilation, Masters of Rock. Like Iron Maiden and Def Leppard, Saxon's early albums were much more raw and unpolished -- from both a sonic and songwriting standpoint -- and this approach suited Saxon perfectly. Included are such pre-MTV headbanging classics as "Strong Arm of the Law," "Never Surrender," "747 (Strangers in the Night)," "Denim and Leather," and "Princess of the Night" (the latter of ...
