Ouch! This Fred Hammond Smooth Jazz Tribute is a great idea in theory. Hammond's gospel song structures lend themselves well to circular rhythm, extended harmonies and melodic improvisation as well as groove-ridden basslines. That said, the "Smooth Jazz All Stars" on Copy Cat Records are nearly atonal in places, their sense of time is simply off in some places, and not there at all in others. The lagging tempos and strictly un-funky arrangements (even in a restrained way) stink. Let's face it, the greatest practitioners in this genre, from the late Grover Washington, Jr., and George Howard, and even to Bob James and Dave Grusin have got some of that going for them. When a rocker like "Lord of the Harvest" is played with a wooden, lifeless-sounding off-key lead saxophone line and it's overdubbed, what do you think you get? Elsewhere, as in Hammond's truly soul-stirring "I Will Find a Way," the drummer sounds more like an old toy department drum machine that needs its batteries changed. Simply terrible. ~ Thom Jurek

Released only months after RAMONES, the Ramones' second album pales slightly in comparison to its stone-classic predecessor--but only slightly. LEAVE HOME contains enough all-time Ramones anthems--"Commando," "Pinhead" (which introduces the legendary "Gabba Gabba Hey" chant), and "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment," to name only three--that it's still an essential document of the New York punk scene. Rhino's remastered 2001 reissue restores the original running order of the album, including "Carbona Not Glue," which was hastily removed from the 1977 vinyl not because it advocated dangerous activities but because the manufacturers of the spot remover Carbona objected.
More importantly, this reissue appends a whopping 16 bonus tracks, the entirety of the Ramones' August 1976 Hollywood live debut. Half the tracks don't even hit the two-minute mark--the longest is "Beat on the Brat," an epic 2:36--and the whole thing is over in under half an hour. Years of hardcore punk and the ever-increasing BPMs of underground dance music mean that this stuff doesn't sound as shockingly speedy now as it did at the time; what's surprising is how cheerful and poppy this allegedly transgressive music comes across, and how unexpectedly tight and well-rehearsed the supposedly sloppy band is.
As fine as it is -- and it's a really entertaining record, especially in retrospect -- the Ramones' second album, Leave Home, isn't as good as their first, largely ...

By 1966, Eddie Fisher's recording career seemed to have come to an end. After scoring numerous hits on RCA Victor in the 1950s, he had recorded for several labels in the early '60s (including his own imprint, Ramrod) and had a sojourn on Dot in the mid-'60s that ended in poor sales. But he returned to RCA and cut "Games That Lovers Play," a major easy listening hit and nearly a Top 40 pop entry, and followed it with the Nelson Riddle-arranged-and-conducted LP of the same name that restored his commercial and artistic credibility.
