Although there are some fine solos on this big-band set, the main point to this project is the writing of trombonist Ryan Haines. His nine originals form a type of suite, with each part dedicated to some aspect of his life, including past bands, San Diego, and family members. The key soloists are tenor saxophonist Tedd Baker, Lucas Munce on alto and soprano, and especially Haines, who has spots on six of the numbers, but much of the music is ensemble-oriented. While the individual melodies are not all that memorable by themselves (other than the whimsical "Riding the Bavarian Sidecar"), on a whole the music is swinging, colorful, and just unpredictable enough to hold one's interest throughout. ~ Scott Yanow
