The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP; all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section -- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer Elvin Jones -- consistently stimulates his imagination. This release has more variety than usual, for in addition to his alto playing (including a memorable unaccompanied solo on "Over the Rainbow"), Pepper switches to clarinet for the lengthy "More for Les" and interprets the ballad "These Foolish Things" on tenor. The nine-CD set is essential for Art Pepper fanatics, but those just wanting a taste of the great altoist's talents will be satisfied with this release. ~ Scott Yanow

A tie-in with the Bratz toy line, the ROCK ANGELZ album features the five Bratz girls--Roxxi, Jade, Cloe, Sasha, and Yasmin--fronting their own band. Though they're known for having a "passion for fashion," these Bratz clearly know how to rock out, too. The music here is energetic, guitar-based pop in the Hilary Duff/Lindsay Lohan vein, though "Who I Am" and "Stand Out" add a metal edge to the Bratz's sound. As with any respectable 'tween-pop record, there are soaring power ballads on ROCK ANGELZ, including the yearning "Change the World" and the loner anthem "Nobody's Girl." For Bratz collectors and fans of Duff, Lohan, Avril Lavigne, and other like-minded artists, ROCK ANGELZ is sure to be an enjoyable album that's perfect for singalongs and slumber parties.

The resurfacing of the concept of a compilation of recent hit songs recorded not by the original artists but by a coterie of session singers and musicians is a bizarre development in the pop world, but, if you're this album's target age of around ten years old you probably won't be able to tell the difference between the retreads and the real thing. Plus the artists on KIDZ BOP articulate better than the originals, so you can actually hear the words, sometimes for the first time.
The album starts out promisingly with a game version of Smash Mouth's "All Star" complete, as are most of these cuts, with kiddie chorus, while Britney Spears' "Oops...I Did it Again" is similarly perky, despite seemingly being sung by her (considerably) older sister. On the other hand, Len's "Steal My Sunshine" is sung completely by kids, which leads to a few bizarre moments in the talkover segments ("what do you think she got up to last night?" is just plain weird when spoken ...
