On his 2007 full-length studio follow-up to WITH TEETH, Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor steps away from the relatively straight-ahead rock aesthetic of that record, opting instead for an intentionally abrasive sound lined with sharp shards of noise and static. Tied together by an enigmatic, X-FILES-like concept involving an apocalyptic scenario, YEAR ZERO is marked by tell-tale tracks such as "Survivalism," a fierce number that harkens back to THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL, and "In This Twilight," a bleak, distortion-filled song.
Reportedly influenced by the Bomb Squad's spare, hard-hitting production on vintage Public Enemy releases (a point driven home by the stark, stuttering "My Violent Heart"), ZERO also reveals that Reznor picked up a few experimental tricks from tour-mates TV on the Radio, as best exemplified by the guitar squalls of the aforementioned "Survivalism." Less personal and more cinematic than preceding outings, YEAR ZERO is arguably NIN's least-accessible album, and proves that Reznor hasn't abandoned his SPIRAL-era post as a sonic agitator who has infiltrated the mainstream.
Despite its imposing and impossible title, Y34RZ3R0R3MIX3D is actually a highly accessible record. That's meant literally. As an addendum to the Nine Inch Nails remix album on disc one, disc two comes on a DVD/CD ROM that features the multi-track masters of all the original tracks, allowing listeners to revise and remix the tracks themselves. Who would have thought Trent Reznor would release the first industrial-pop "Choose Your Own Adventure"-style album?
That remarkable novelty aside, disc one of Y34RZ3R0R3MIX3D contains some excellent remixes of tracks from 2007's YEAR ZERO. Not only is the material strong (YEAR ZERO was the best NIN effort in years), but the remixes, which include work from Kronos Quartet, Bill Laswell, the Faint, and Olof Dreijer from the Knife, bring a fresh spin to NIN's music by highlighting its dancey and experimental tendencies.Rolling Stone (p.111) - Included in Rolling Stone's "50 Top Albums of the Year 2007". Entertainment Weekly (p.61) - "[H]e drives his messages home with the whisper-to-a-scream vocal melodrama and the most chaotically catchy tunes he and his arsenal of machines can generate." Alternative Press (p.158) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "For YEAR ZERO, Nine Inch Nails chairman Trent Reznor sets his machinery on 'kill' and points it toward authority and herd mentality, dicing up guitars and laptops synths like an Enron paper trail." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.70) - Ranked #8 in Kerrang's "The Top 20 Albums Of 2007" -- "[A] spectacular, chilling record..." Nine Inch Nails Year Zero Songs Year Zero Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews More Than A CD Reznor really drags you in this oppressive, apocalyptic universe. Songs like Meet you master and Capital G are very pop-influenced, but The Greater Good and In This Twilight really show the genius of Trent Reznor. Buy it. Buy it now. Not very impressed. Yeah, Trent said this is a concept album; The Fragile was a concept album too, and is one of the best works to date, but Year Zero simply doesn't reach that level of perfection. It is still NIN, but very pop influenced. Submitted by elcomegatodavid (Venezuela) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Overall? Good! This was a great album, but mabey not quite as good as The Fragile or The Downward Spiral. It is very electronical and kinda goes in a different direction than some of NINs other albums. My favorites are God Given, Capital G, The Good Soldiar, and Meet Your Master. I was reluctant to get this album but give it a chance; it'll grow on you! Submitted by Matt (Chatham, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
most bombastic album i've ever heard i think nin have taken their sound to the next level this is a notch above with teeth which was a good album this album bumps year zero brings the bass and noise so hard it'll leave your ears achin Submitted by Westonnixon89 (Altoona,Iowa) Was This Review Helpful? Bad first impression, first impressions are lies I think this scared a lot of old school NIN fans. I think it stands out wholly from the rest. It is less personally neurotic and more satirical, aggressive and powerful.
I was also hesitant with this album, but after a couple of listens I might actually deem this with the title of best album.
The thought Reznor put into not just the plain album, but the whole story, is amazing. Even if you listen to just the music, and don't get into the story, I think you would feel empowered to kill the system.

Over the course of his musical career, Trent Reznor has managed to deliver a full-length studio album about every five years. Although he's a bit late with 2005's WITH TEETH (following 1999's THE FRAGILE), listeners are rewarded with Nine Inch Nails' most streamlined and straightforward record since PRETTY HATE MACHINE. Here Reznor cuts back on programming and synthesizers, opting for heavy use of guitars, ...

Year Zero CD music
$10.15 From the very beginning of Desde el Carnegie Hall, Victor Manuelle and his crew are a cut above the rest. This is easily evident in the adoring cries of a packed-out house, sometimes nearly overpowering the confidently swinging band. As with any project out of the Estefan camp, the arrangements and instrumental performances are virtually peerless. With a strong preference toward the studio, most salsa artists of the day miss out on the opportunities afforded ...
| | Patrizio Italian CD (2005)
Year Zero music CDs
$12.59 Patrizio Buanne is veritably obsessed with the sound and style of the 1950s and '60s. As a child, he won an Elvis impersonation competition when he dressed as a young version of the King, and he grew up listening almost solely to Italian or Italian-inspired music from that same time period. And now, with his debut album, The Italian, he is able to sing many of the songs he loves. Recorded in London with the Royal Philharmonic, The Italian often harks back to the sound of the original recordings, like in Jimmy Fontana's "Il Mondo," Engelbert Humperdinck's "A Man Without Love," or Mario Lanza's "Come Prima," and Buanne sounds good, his baritone blending well with the orchestra. However, Buanne runs into problems when he tries to modernize the classics. While "Parla Pił Piano," from The Godfather, starts out nicely, the addition of a dance-like drumbeat sounds corny and forced. Even worse is the cover of Fontana's "Che Sarą," which turns the song into an easy listening radio favorite, culminating in a gospely choral extravaganza, with alternating phrases from the crooning Buanne, who transforms the lines of leaving one's prospectless town (but with the intention of returning) into overly dramatic lovesickness, and the choir, whose sharp interpretation of the normally fluid Italian syllables gives a threatening feel to the piece. The only truly successful of these adaptations is "L'Italiano," which adds a nicely moving piano line, an electric guitar, and a brass section to the already great song, and sounds new but not kitschy. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of "Home to Mamma," which Buanne helped co-write. It's a bizarre mix of "Funiculi, Funicula," Lou Bega's "Mambo No. 5," and the Italian male's devotion to his mother, and is more confusing than anything else. The same adjective can also be applied to the Italian-language version of Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over" (called "Alta Marea" here), or the closer, "Credi ...
