| | Jaylib Champion Sound CD Jaylib Discography of CDs
Four years after the collaboration album between Madlib and Jay Dee first appeared, fans get a second look at CHAMPION SOUND in this deluxe re-issue on Stones Throw. Featuring two of indie rap's most talented and innovative producer-MCs going back and forth over each other's beats, CHAMPION SOUND saw both artists rising to another level. Though somewhat slept-on commercially at the time of its original release, CHAMPION SOUND is a prime example of raw underground hip-hop at its best. With a total of 43 tracks, the double CD deluxe edition features instrumentals, b-sides, previously unreleased cuts, and remixes.
Composers: Madlib; J Dilla.
Jaylib: Jay Dee, Madlib.
Additional personnel: Frank-N-Dank, Talib Kweli, Quasimoto, Guilty Simpson, Percee P.

| | Mindless Self Indulgence Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy CD (1999)
Champion Sound CD music
$10.39 Principally recorded at The Theater Studio & Mindswerve, New York, New York.
Mindless Self Indulgence's brilliantly named The Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy collects more of the group's outré, hip-hop-tinged industrial thrash. Singer Urine's bizarre falsetto sounds like a sped-up Jello Biafra, especially on tracks like "Boomin'" and "I Hate Jimmy Page." The album's 30 songs -- which sport titles like "Dicks Are for My Friends," "Cocaine and Toupees," "Faggot," and "Royally Fucked" -- are all pretty much slight variations on the group's fast-and-shocking style. Though The Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy doesn't ...
| | Joe Bonamassa Had To Cry Today CD (2004)
Champion Sound music CDs
$13.79 Blues-rock guitar wizard Joe Bonamassa can make a set of electric six-strings burn and wail, but like many such guitarists, he still requires focus for it to be truly special. Such intense focus is a hallmark of HAD TO CRY TODAY. While some guitarists squander notes, Bonamassa makes each ...
| | J Dilla Donuts CD (2006)
Champion Sound songs
$13.15 Donuts was made on a hospital bed and in a home studio, on a stripped-down setup with a stack of vinyl. Released on its maker's 32nd birthday, three days before he passed away, the album has a resonance deeper than anyone could've hoped for or even imagined. Some who were close to Dilla have said that there are hidden messages in the samples, the track titles, and who knows where else. It's impossible not to speculate about some things, like the track titled "Don't Cry," the looped "broken and blue" from a version of "Walk on By," the presence of Eddie Kendricks singing "My people, hold on," or the fact that there are 31 tracks, a possible signal that Dilla survived a little longer than he expected. Then again, for every possible message, there are two or three elements that could've been designed to throw any analysis off its trail. After all, if there's one single image that the disc brings to mind, it's that of Dilla goofing off, having fun with some of his favorite records, and messing with some heads in the process. (And you could probably make the album's title out to be a metaphor for the circle of life, but sometimes a donut is just a donut.) Armed with sources that are either known to novice sample spotters or only the most seasoned diggers -- surprisingly, the former greatly outweighs the latter -- Dilla's also just as likely to leave his samples barely touched as he is to render them unrecognizable. It's fitting that Motown echoes, a predominant theme, are often felt, from the use of Dionne Warwick's Holland-Dozier-Holland-written "You're Gonna Need Me" (on "Stop"), to the shifting waves of percussion plucked from Kendricks' "People... Hold On" (on "People"), to the Stevie-like piano licks within ...

| Illa J Yancey Boys CD (2008)
Champion Sound album
$12.39 The title of rapper/singer Illa J's debut album refers to the man himself along with his older brother J Dilla, aka Jay Dee, the game-changing hip-hop producer from Detroit who passed away in 2006 at the age of 32. The beats on Yancey Boys are "all previously untouched Jay Dee gems" that were given to Illa J by Delicious Vinyl's founder, Michael Ross. Safe to say, the younger Yancey's first encounter with these tracks had to bring a heavy set of emotions, but with everything here being immediately recognizable as Dilla, the end result for the longtime fan is still one of ghosts and bittersweet memories. Nocturnal keyboards, elegant pianos, lazy beats, and the occasional Kraftwerk-like twist all combine to make warm soul music, but save the D'Angelo-like "We Here" and the more hip-hop highlight "DFTF," those final Dilla touches are missing, as they were on all those sketchbook-like bootleg beat tapes that have appeared since the man's passing. The younger Yancey's contributions are unsurprising lyrics that sing the praises of chilling or soul searching by wandering in circles. Worst of the latter is the perhaps ironically titled "Timeless," which kicks off the uncertain album with "I spent so much time living inside the bubble/I just wanna lay back and stay outta trouble/I think its time for me to break out of the shell/And I can't be afraid to fail." To his credit, his heavy workload includes putting the finishing ...

| | Isley Brothers It's Your Thing CD (1969)
Champion Sound songs
$6.59 Sony Special Products' It's Your Thing collects a bunch of highlights from the Isley Brothers' classic recordings for T-Neck. Although it's simply a haphazard collection of hits and highlights from their various albums, their records of the era were so strong, they can be rearranged in any form and the end result will be quite listenable -- as this proves. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Features 10 tracks including these top-selling hits 'It's Your Thing', 'Fight The Power' and 'Hello It's Me'. Collectables. 2004.
A very important album for the Isley Brothers, 1969's It's Our Thing found Ronald, O'Kelly and Rudolph Isley reviving their T-Neck label and marked the beginning of their association with Buddah (where they would remain until moving T-Neck to Epic/CBS in 1973). Creatively, this excellent LP put the siblings in the driver's seat -- they did all of the producing and songwriting themselves -- and they enjoyed the type of artistic freedom that they could only dream about when they were with Tamla/Motown from 1965-1968. At Tamla/Motown, Berry Gordy's team of producers and songwriters called the shots, but at T-Neck/Buddah, the Isleys' own vision was allowed to flourish. And that creative freedom made It's Our Thing a commercial triumph as well as an artistic one. The funky title track soared to number two on the R&B charts, and equally invigorating gems like "Give the Women What They Want" and "I Know Who You Been Socking It To" also went down in history ...
| | Renee Rosnes Letter To Evans CD (2006) (Import) Japan
Champion Sound album
$18.15 Pianist Renee Rosnes, bassist Ray Drummond, and drummer Billy Drummond (her husband at the time), put together a fine tribute to the late pianist Bill Evans on these 2000 sessions, though they don't play any of his timeless compositions. Instead, they build upon his vast recorded legacy by interpreting standards and modern compositions that Evans enjoyed playing. While there is a touch of Evans' lyricism in Rosnes' playing, she is no mere copycat; while Ray Drummond's tasty, inventive basslines and Billy Drummond's light-handed percussion would have possibly been an excellent rhythm section for Evans. Rosnes' debt to Evans is most apparent in the upbeat treatment of Earl Zindars' "How My Heart Sings" and the brisk ...
