A veteran of the New York coffee house circuit who recorded with Jimi Hendrix, Buzz Linhart recorded this classic debut in London in 1968. Featuring backing from Welsh psychedelic favourites the Eyes Of Blue, it's a superb collection of acid-influenced folk and pop, including the epic, sitar-tinged raga Sing Joy, and is sure to appeal to all fans of hippie singersongwriting.

Personnel: Buzzy Linhart (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, keyboards, vibraphone, marimba, drums, percussion); Raymond "Taff" Williams, Ray Taff Williams (guitar); Jim Sullivan (sitar); Phil Ryan (organ, Mellotron, keyboards); John Weathers (drums, timpani); Keshav Sathe, Kesh Sathie (tabla).
Recording information: Chappell Recording Studios, London, England (10/1968).
Author: Ted Joans.
Photographer: Dunstan Pereira.
Linhart's debut album is a strange, unfocused affair, the kind of thing that would have only been issued by a major label in the late '60s. The singer varies between relatively short songs and way-extended workouts that mix folk with rock, Indian music (Big Jim Sullivan plays sitar), and even some mellotron. Linhart uses drawn-out blues-folk phrasing that owes quite a bit to Village folk-rockers like Tim Hardin and Fred Neil, and in fact a five-and-a-half-minute workout on Hardin's blues, "Yellow Cab," opens the LP. The ten-minute "Willie Jean" is next, and actually Phil Ryan's mellotron here gives the song an unusual lift that helps to differentiate what would otherwise be an OK but unremarkable anguished folk ballad. The 18-minute "Sing Joy" takes up most of side two, and its Indian-oriented improvisation gets tedious after a promising opening burst of ominous orchestral drone. When he milks that drone for an entire, albeit three-minute, song (the closing "End Song," overlaid with mellotron), the result is more interesting, recalling Fred Neil at his most despondent, but with freakier production. It's no mystery as to why Linhart favored these elastic, spontaneous-sounding folk/jazz/blues/Indian/rock fusions; he had no doubt played that kind of music when one of his bands, the Seventh Sons, backed Fred Neil live in the mid-'60s. Still, his singing, songwriting, and editing capabilities were not quite up to the point where he could shine on an album all his own. ~ Richie Unterberger

2003 album from the avant-garde performer is a song recital recruiting blues, R&B, Motown, southern soul, country & western, & her own 'Baby's Insane' (from 'This Sporting Life' [1994]), her duo album with John Paul Jones). 15 tracks recorded between May 1999 & November 2002. Mute. Personnel: Diamanda Galás (vocals, piano).
Blues is a scary form of music. The authentic blues relies on the turmoil of strong, often shameful emotions. Bluesmen like John Lee Hooker and Screamin' Jay Hawkins could sing in a very scary voice that sent shivers down your spine. So can Diamanda Galás. In fact, she's the scariest of them all. Then again, she's not a blues singer. Or isn't she? Her fantastic vocal range and powerful lungs are certainly more opera than roots, but her gothic looks and her topics of choice (despair and redemption) put her much closer to the Blues (with a capital B) than one could suspect at first. And when she dives into "Ain't No Grave Can Hold My Body Down" or Hooker's "Burning Hell," she is one of the greatest blueswomen who ever lived. But what she does to the blues is unique, and makes La Serpenta Canta a unique album. Recorded live, mostly in 2001-2002, it features the dark dame alone at the piano (her soundman Blaise Dupuy occasionally adds effects in her piano or microphone). She reinvents from top to bottom a cross section of songs about people hurting. It's not ...

The Roots: Black Thought (rap vocals); Captain Kirk Douglas (guitar); Kamal Gray (keyboards); Leonard Hubbard (bass guitar); ?uestlove (drums); Frank "Knuckles" Walker (percussion).
Despite what critics might have said about their two previous efforts, true hip-hop heads know that the Roots never fell off. On their seventh studio album, Philadelphia's favorite sons continue to elevate their signature sound that has for years appealed to rap purists and staggered the more critical listeners who love to lament the lack of musicianship in hip-hop.
Fans who were worried about how the crew's style would mesh with the Def Jam formula will be relieved from the gate, as the intro (an eerily ambient reworking of the Jay Dee-produced "Fantastic" intro) gives way to the upbeat, drum-driven "False Media." Equally relieving to longtime Roots fans is the return of Malik B whose aggressive delivery again provides balance to Black Thought's more measured cadence. On the whole, GAME THEORY contains heavier subject matter; the politics of the day pervade virtually every track, while the tone ranges from heated urgency ("Don't Feel Right" and "In The Music") to the uplifting and soulful ("Baby" and "Long Time") to sad introspection ("Atonement" and the bonus track tribute to the late Jay Dee). GAME THEORY is hip-hop with a message and shows us an angrier, more impassioned group of artists eager to tackle the issues confronting their community, yet still doing it with true bounce.
Game Theory is the Roots' equivalent of a Funkadelic playlist containing "Wars of Armageddon," "Cosmic Slop," "Maggot Brain," "March to the Witch's Castle," and "America Eats Its Young." It's a vivid reflector of the times, not an escape hatch (of which there are several readily available options). Spinning turbulence, paranoia, anger, and pain into some of the most exhilarating and startling music released in 2006, the group is audibly galvanized by the world's neverending tailspin and a sympathetic alignment with Def Jam. Batting around stray ideas and squeezing them into shape was ...
