After lending his considerable guitar prowess to various Japanese psych acts, Michio Kurihara finally released his debut solo record in 2007 on Ba Da Bing. A song cycle centered on nine different sunsets, SUNSET NOTES is not only a modern psych guitar tour de force but also a mesmerizing reflection on nature's dazzling daily showstopper. Some are brilliant and fiery, as evidenced in the blazing fretwork of "Twilight Mystery of A Russian Cowboy"; some are wistful, like the garage nugget "Do Deep Sea Fish Dream of Electric Moles"; and some are gentle and mournful like the female-voiced "Wind Waltzes" and "The Wind's Twelve Quarters." Like the title subject matter, SUNSET NOTES is epic and essential.

Om is the rhythm section of stoner rock wig-out band Sleep -- bassist Al Cisneros and drummer Chris Haikus. There are two long cuts on this slab totaling a little over 33 minutes. While it's true that having two instruments play repetitive droning grooves over and again leaves room for little true variation, it hardly matters. Conference of the Birds has the ability to get underneath the skin of the listener and keep burrowing. There are small rests in each composition, with cosmic, acid-drenched lyrics: "traverse the Cheopian field/Rides out from the red sun high above...." Yeah, but so what. These guys have Syd Barrett's sense of efficacy -- slow, slower, slowest -- clear Sisyphean trudges toward some unholy and unseen peak that ends pretty much in the same place they began. It's in between that counts. And here, slowly skittering snares and drums creep mercilessly along to a bass playing a melody line that offers itself as a bassline. Psychedelic? Yep. Boring as all get out? Only if you take the parts separately. While "At Gina" suffers a tiny bit from the seaminess of the vocals, it still slithers along to displace time and space. Yet it's "Flight of the Eagle" that actually carries the ever-darkening day, simply by the sheer force of that bass. It's a pure, wide-range, low-end throb that pushes ...

An utterly unique accomplishment, Scott Walker's THE DRIFT is the enigmatic British-based singer-songwriter's first official album since 1995's challenging TILT. Those looking for the Brechtian drama and crooner stylings of Walker's lauded late-'60s work will happily find them on these 10 haunting tracks, albeit in altered forms that often bypass melody to create what sometimes recalls a chilling sonic abstraction of Edgar Allan Poe's writings.
While two extended tracks, "Clara" and "Cue," wander down some frightening paths (occasionally calling to mind Kronos Quartet's BLACK ANGELS), and make up a considerable amount of THE DRIFT, the record also includes slightly less daunting pieces such as "Cossacks Are," which builds to propulsive rhythmic passages, and "Jesse," a brooding song seemingly rising up from some forsaken underground chamber. Far from accessible, yet mesmerizing in its bleak minimalist vision, THE DRIFT once again reinforces Walker's reputation as a fascinating and thoroughly unconventional artist.

The rambunctious R&B punch of "Compared to What," the tune pianist Les McCann and saxophonist Eddie Harris use to open their 1969 Montreux Festival set, signals that this won't be your average jazz concert. With the song's topical lyrics about the Vietnam War and social concerns, sung by McCann in a gravelly, soulful voice, "Compared to What" rocks more than it swings. In fact, "Kathleen's Theme," with its straight 4/4 rhythm and knotty solo from Harris, and "The Generation Gap," with its modal progressions, are about the only straightforward jazz pieces here.
