Mike Post is best known for composing the theme songs for such hit TV shows as Law & Order, Rockford Files and Hill Street Blues. So, it may come as a surprise that another side of his musical passion is the blues! The initial disc by Post assembled L.A. Blues Alliance to record What a Life live in the studio; they did it with only a few takes, if that, allotted for each track and a democratic vibe in which each musician brought in both originals and blues favorites to the sessions. Along with production duties, Post took it upon himself to assemble a crack band that consists of guitarists W.G. Snuffy Walden, Keb' Mo' and Sonny Landreth, vocalist Amy Keys, bassist Bob Glaub, keyboardists David Morgan and Mike Finnigan, drummer John Robinson, and Stan Behrens switching between harmonica and tenor sax. Of the 15 tracks, eight are cover versions. Far too often on hastily assembled recordings of this nature, "cover versions" can be translated to mean generic or geriatric; but, upon first hearing Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line," reinterpreted as a gutbucket blues, it becomes clear that this is definitely not a paint-by-numbers affair. The musicians don't get hung up on one specific style of blues; they cover a lot of ground, paying homage along the way to Howlin' Wolf "Who's Been Talkin,'" Son House "Death Letter," Big Joe Turner "T.V. Mama," Skip James "Illinois Blues," Clyde McPhatter "Money Honey," Smokey Robinson "Shop Around," and Stevie Wonder "Maybe Your Baby." L.A. Blues Alliance is a rewarding musical endeavor that has the potential to go beyond a one shot dream project. ~ Al Campbell

Let's dispel a common misconception right off the bat; Keb Mo is not a blues singer. To call him one would be as limiting as calling Lyle Lovett a country singer. He's got his finger in too many musical pies to be tied down ...

What A Life songs
$13.35 The complete output of eight different singers is reissued on this single CD. The music was recorded in Dallas, Atlanta, Memphis, Richmond, Indiana, and Grafton, WI, with the personnel sometimes overlapping. Ollie Ross and Hattie Burleson both recorded on the same day in 1928 with similar personnel that includes either Don Albert or Willie Long on trumpet. Ross is decent but Burleson is powerful and fortunately she received a second chance, recording ...

What A Life CD music
$12.99 Tina Turner's gazillion-selling last album of the '80s was, among other interesting things, a sort of affirmative action program for singer-songwriter-guitarist Tony Joe White. White had been little heard from at the time, but here he not only contributed four songs, including the characteristically swampy "Steamy Windows" (where he bounced sinuous lead guitar off Mark Knopfler's charged rhythm work) but also co-produced them. Turner herself is in sensational form throughout the album, particularly on the return to her roots that is "Undercover Agent for the Blues," and the knowingly anthemic and self-referential "The Best." The song's ...

| | Aaron Alexander Blues For Sparky CD (2003)
What A Life album
$12.15 Aaron Alexander is one of the premier drummers in New York City, a first-call musician on the feverishly creative downtown scene who excels at playing modern jazz and a cross-pollinating pluralistic music based in a klezmer aesthetic that's just too bold and free-wheeling for easy categorization. Whichever style he plays, this technically expert musician originally from Seattle animates his traps with a supreme confidence, an uncommonly rich musical imagination, and an almost palpable passion or tenderness. Blues for Sparky, Alexander's first feature CD, released in 2003, showcases the drummer's more straight-forward jazz inclinations, his melodically phrased, altogether sublime work, in perfect communion with that of saxophonist Greg Wall, trumpeter Andy Gravish (his credits include Artie Shaw, Buddy Rich and Toshiko Akiyoshi), trombonist Ben Williams (George Coleman, Oliver Lake), pianist Mitch Schechter (Vic Juris, Marty Fogel), and bassist Brian Glassman (Lionel Hampton, Benny Golson).Based in New York City since 1993, Alexander has involved himself in many high-quality jazz and Jewish music-oriented projects, both as bandleader and sideman. His career highlights to date include touring Europe numerous times with his collective trio Babkas, Hasidic New Wave, among others, supporting ...
