New Sound Theory Vol. 4
$12.25 Personnel: Rachel Jenson (vocals); Jason Anderson (guitar); Zac Pennington (bells); Sting. Additional personnel: Claire Evans. Recording information: 2004. Originally issued in 2004, and re-released in '07, the Blow's POOR AIM: LOVE SONGS presents an excellent assemblage of the performance-art/pop musings of Khaela Maricich and Jona Bechtolt. Pairing Maricich's sing-song vocals and stream-of-consciousness lyrics with Bechtolt's minimalist techno-pop arrangements, the Portland, Oregon-based duo, with its quirky, naïve charm, sometimes brings to mind an electro version of its regional predecessors, Beat Happening. Like other entries in the States Rights Records/Slender Means Society's Pregnancy Series, the Blow's Poor Aim: Love Songs is a CD EP that's kind of a sampler of the act's sound, or an airing out of material that doesn't have a natural home on their longer releases. Here Blow consist of Khaela Maricich and Jona Bechtolt, laying down a sound that's more funk-oriented than Blow's early recordings, ...
