While there are lighter moments on ZEITGEIST (see the shimmering "Neverlost"), the Pumpkins seem most at home when doling out heavy, upbeat numbers, particularly the searing "Doomsday Clock" and the hard-charging "Tarantula," which showcase Corgan's signature six-string ferocity and Chamberlain's percussive punch. By reining in his often-overactive muse, Corgan has arguably crafted his most focused record since SIAMESE DREAM, making the reinvigorated Pumpkins--rounded out by touring musicians Jeff Schroeder (guitar), Ginger Reyes (bass), and Lisa Hamilton (keyboards)--much more than just a halfhearted reunion act.
Following the demise of the short-lived Zwan and an ill-received solo album (THEFUTUREEMBRACE), singer/guitarist Billy Corgan decided to revive the Smashing Pumpkins, issuing ZEITGEIST, the revered alternative-rock group's first official studio outing in more than seven years, in the summer of 2007. Pared down to the core of Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain for the album's recording, the Pumpkins sidestep past sonic indulgences, avoiding the overt lushness of MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS and the electronic leanings of ADORE, to create a sharply honed aesthetic that is enhanced by the presence of veteran producers Roy Thomas Baker (The Cars, Queen) and Terry Date (Deftones, Soundgarden).
The Smashing Pumpkins: Billy Corgan (various instruments); Jimmy Chamberlin (drums).
Rolling Stone (p.90) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The best thing about ZEITGEIST is that Corgan is back to what he does best: hard-rock architecture. His wall-of-guitars overdubs are exhilarating in their details." Rolling Stone (p.115) - Included in Rolling Stone's "50 Top Albums of the Year 2007" -- "[They] make an art-pop roar worthy of the Pumpkins crown." Spin (p.105) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his is a loud, almost triumphant statement that finds the Pumpkins' founder rediscovering his strengths..." Entertainment Weekly (p.67) - "This resumption of a brand name and sensibility brings the thunder; if you're nostalgic for the 90's, it's like curling up with a warm Marshall stack." -- Grade: B Uncut (p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "ZEITGEIST is irrefutable evidence that Corgan's vividly haunting and singularly menacing songwriting faculties are indeed still intact." Smashing Pumpkins Zeitgeist Songs Zeitgeist Music Review Average Rating: (3.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Goof effort This is definately a better album compared to their last 2 albums. The songs are fairly similar in sound to their earlier albums "Siamese Dream" and "Gish", however I would not rate this album as highly. Best songs are Doomsday Clock, Tarantula and United Sates. Overall, a good effort but not great.

Sit Back A Bit Billy Corgan I've been a Pumpkins fan before Gish broke through the "college underground". Although this is their best effort in a while I ponder upon how much better it might be if instrumentally the band was given more opportunity for performing without giving way so much to B. Corgan's vocal upstaging. JUST THE SAME, I REALLY ENJOY THIS WORK and recommend it to any Pumpkin fan. I so hope to hear more from the band. Submitted by Johnnie (Erie, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Not Disappointed But.... Ok album overall nice return to for the pumpkins. Hope to hear more from them and I think the only direction from here is up. Submitted by fuller20202gmail.com (Tampa, Florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Natural Progression I believe this album fits nicely into the Pumpkins progression. Still has the layered, driving guitars and the drumming is as only Jimmy Chamberlain can do it. Evolutionary, not revolutionary. Submitted by Jeff (Edmonton, AB, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A 4 Star Rock Album The best Smashing Pumpkins album since their 90s golden era. Zeitgeist is sure to please all Pumpkin Heads. My fav songs are Doomsday Clock, 7 Shades Of Black, Bleeding The Orchid, Tarantula, Starz, United States, and the great mellow jam Neverlost. Buy it ASAP

| | Tool 10,000 Days CD (2006)
Zeitgeist CD music
$11.75 To its legion of fans, everything the band Tool does is an event, but the elaborate plan behind their sporadic release schedule--roughly five years, on average, between albums--is due primarily to the time and effort the band packs into each successive effort. To title their fourth album 10,000 DAYS, then, isn't as much an exaggeration as it would seem. Tool are America's most consummate mainstream perfectionists, revitalizing progressive ...
| | Nine Inch Nails Year Zero CD (2007)
Zeitgeist music CDs
$14.89 On his 2007 full-length studio follow-up to WITH TEETH, Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor steps away from the relatively straight-ahead rock aesthetic of that record, opting instead for an intentionally abrasive sound lined with sharp shards of noise and static. Tied together by an enigmatic, X-FILES-like concept involving an apocalyptic scenario, YEAR ZERO is marked by tell-tale tracks such as "Survivalism," a fierce number that harkens back to THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL, and "In This Twilight," a bleak, distortion-filled song.
Reportedly influenced by the Bomb Squad's spare, hard-hitting production on vintage Public Enemy releases (a point driven home by the stark, stuttering "My Violent Heart"), ZERO also reveals that Reznor picked up a few experimental tricks from tour-mates TV on the Radio, as best exemplified by the guitar squalls of the aforementioned "Survivalism." Less personal and more cinematic than ...

| | Hot Rod Gang CD (1993)
Zeitgeist music CDs
$18.15 This is one cool collection, maybe the greatest body of unknown car songs ever put together by anybody, and they're all loud, raucous songs that also, coincidentally, mix in sex, rebellion, and general delinquent behavior. Walt Benton gets things started hot and heavy with the hot rod/sex anthem "Big Wheel," which mixes the punkiest elements of Chuck Berry and Ritchie Valens' sounds. It's pedal to the metal time from there on, through Howie Stange's "This Old Bomb of Mine" (Stange put down his mandolin long enough to come up with a classic that just misses "Maybelline" status; not so the Berry Brothers' rocking instrumental "Hot Rod," which doesn't waste a note or an opportunity. Chuck Brooks and the Sharpies' "Spinning My Wheels" lets up on the intensity, but is such a cool example of '50s pre-punk bravado that it's as indispensable as anything else here, and that's not at all. Richie Deran's "Girl in a Hot Rod" falls short in ...

| | Dephazz Days Of Twang CD (2007) Digipak
Zeitgeist songs
$13.89 The Miami-based Kriztal Entertainment is closely identified with the kinder, gentler side of electronica. Kriztal releases have generally been melodic and sleek, and in some cases, they have been downright lush. Emphasizing downtempo, chillout, and trip-hop, De-Phazz' seventh album, Days of Twang (which Kriztal licensed from Phazz-a-delic in Germany and distributed in the United States) is smooth, polished, and gently funky in a way that is quite typical of albums Kriztal has released or licensed. But Days of Twang has a quirky eccentricity that sets it apart from other discs in the Kriztal catalog. During the course of the album, De-Phazz incorporates elements of everything from soul, funk, blues, jazz, and reggae, to early rock & roll, and through it all, ...
