Ugh. This Southern Rock Tribute to Toby Keith has all the redneck but none of the Southern rock to fuse together with Keith's original material. Keith is a fairly controversial figure for all his beer-drinking, hell-raising patriotism and outspokenness on numerous topics befitting a country music superstar, but this set of cuts by the studio-made "Rebel Pride" is anything but a tribute. Instead, it's a watering down of charm and a caricature attempt at an album of pretty great songs by the original artist. Turgidly loose, rhythmically erratic, horribly sung and sonically awful, this one is best left to those who know the real difference between Southern rock and just plain bad rock. ~ Thom Jurek

| | Louis Ledford Reverie CD (2004)
Southern Rock Tribute To Toby Keith
$13.15 On Reverie, Louis Ledford reminds one a little bit of an early Bob Dylan. He's a little scruffy around the edges and world-weary, giving the impression of someone who's done some hard traveling. This impression only holds true for the first two tracks ("All of My Dreams/Most of the Time" and "Make It Home") before shifting abruptly to alternative country on "Belle Isle." In both cases, though, Ledford retains a melancholy mood and has a lot to say about life's hard knocks. One gains the impression on "Lonesome Road" of lives that somehow fell short of their potential as possibilities narrowed. "Belle Isle" is a very long tale about the horrors of prison life during the Civil War, while "Lately," to borrow from Ledford's notes, is "about addiction, deception, anger, and violence." This makes the occasional deviation a relief. "Maury Street" combines a nice bit of blues with a bouncy backbeat, the kind of thing that Tom Waits might tear into. The lyrics here may sound just as desperate as anything on the album, but the bouncy beat gives the song a romantic edge. These songs, like some of Dylan's, are often long, and may try the non-folknik's patience. Ledford, however, has made a solid album, updating folk and, on occasion, country for the post-millennium. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
"Louis Ledford is a great songwriter; witty, insightful, and observant regarding the oddities of human behavior. There is a real powerful air of truth in his music." - J. Kelly, Creative Loafing, Atlanta"Ledford's attention to lyrical detail is simply stunning." -J. Holgren, 9 X Music MagazineThis guy's music will sneak up on ya. Although a city kid born and raised in Richmond, VA, Louis Ledford's familiar roots lay in Western North Carolina and Southwestern Virginia where as a child he soaked up the rural culture and music. Ledford spent much of the 1990's fronting and writing songs for the Alt Country band Used Carlotta. He borrows from Randy Newman his style of crawling inside a character and presenting the ...
| | Asylum Street Spankers Spanker Madness CD (2000)
Southern Rock Tribute To Toby Keith
$11.49 If you're ever flipping through the discs in your local record shop wondering "where might I find the perfect soundtrack for my weekend backyard hash get-down," the cover of Spanker Madness, a parody of the propaganda posters associated with the 1938 cult film classic Reefer Madness, should be enough to answer your question. Otherwise, here's the skinny on the disc: This latest Asylum Street Spankers hootenanny consists of 15-some people singing and playing up the wonders of cannabis with everything from guitars, ukuleles, and harmonicas to washboards, bells, and "various pieces of metal piled in the back of Leroy's '67 Ford F100 parked in the studio driveway." The songs are usually trite country blues and old-style jazz ditties: "Wake and Bake" is a love duet about a couple bonding over the morning's first toke of tea, and odd man out and executive producer Wammo stands up for his drug of choice on "Beer." All the tomfoolery (one of the record's more memorable lyrics goes "Marijuana makes me wanna eat candy and screw Madonna/With her hair bleached by peroxide/Huffin' on some nitrous oxide") and the lighthearted jam-session atmosphere makes it tough to take the Spankers seriously, but the album has ...
