A certain rap-metal band once stated "Anger is a gift," in one of their songs, and Warsaw's Antigama couldn't agree more, especially on 2007's Resonance. The quintet has been lurking around since 2000, having issued several releases in their homeland before inking a deal with Relapse (a label that was never ashamed of their love for delicious cacophony) and issuing Resonance, their first domestically available album. Antigama is a group that certainly puts the grind into grindcore, as they push all their instruments -- vocals especially -- to the max throughout, especially on such easy listening works as "Seismic Report" and "Ecstasy." And just when you think there are no trapdoor detours into la-la land here, along comes a strange, Mr. Bungle-esque ditty, "Barbapapex," before the venom resumes on such tracks as "No" and "By and By." Resonance is the sound of four pissed-off lads bashing and screaming away almost exclusively from beginning to end. ~ Greg Prato

A lot of metal fans were left wondering where the hell Disillusion came from upon the release of Back to Times of Splendor. The album, the Germans' first for Metal Blade after an independent debut, blasts off with the eight-and-a-half-minute "And the Mirror Cracked," a busy Dark Tranquillity-style burst of energy that slows down for some power metal (holding the cheese à la Nevermore) and proggy piano before reprising the power chords and dual-melody guitar leads enhanced with keyboards, growls, and clean singing. But what's a mushy mishmash of disparate genre-bending in less capable hands is an inspired turn for Disillusion, which plays to the strengths of the song while showing off impressively technical instrumental capabilities and clever twists and turns -- and, most importantly, sounding natural and unforced in the process. The methodology went like this: former Faith No More/Mr. Bungle/Tomahawk frontman Mike Patton sends hip-hopping turntable masters the X-Ecutioners a bunch of oddball records, then the X-Ecutioners create "sound blocks" out of the albums and send them back to Patton for final tweaking and song-building. Two years in the making, the collaboration feels more like a Patton project than an equal-footing outing, but that doesn't narrow the sound down much, does it? On one hand, there's Patton's penchant for the aggressively avant-garde. On the other, there's his not-as-wild-as-you'd-think appearance on Handsome Boy Modeling School's White People. Blind Guardian fans have grown accustomed to waiting long periods between the band's studio albums, which these masters of German progressive power metal tend to deliver only every four years or so -- much like World Cups, curiously enough. That was precisely the gap separating 2002's A Night at the Opera, which dismayed some longtime fans with its nearly symphonic, unusually complicated compositions, and 2006's A Twist in the Myth, which establishes something of a middle ground between that trend and the group's slightly more approachable earlier material. If you're a fan of roots rock and Texas country music, then this disc will kind of take your breath away before you even hear a note. The pairing of singer/songwriter Chip Taylor and fiddler/singer Carrie Rodriguez has been an inspired one ever since they started making albums together in 2002. On this live album (recorded in Germany at the triennial celebration of the Ruhr region) they are joined by a band that includes pedal steel player Greg Leisz as well as -- get this -- famed jazz/country/experimental guitarist Bill Frisell. The music is by turns soulful and rollicking, with dips into the old book of country standards (Merle Haggard's "Today I Started Loving You Again," Johnny Cash's "Big River") and the slightly less old book of rock & roll standards (Chuck Berry's "Maybellene," Taylor's own "Wild Thing"). Goth-punk firebrands AFI follow up their smash 2006 effort, DECEMBERUNDERGROUND, with the propulsive blast of alterna-glam that is 2009's CRASH LOVE. Sticky with epic swaths of melodic rock and just enough swaggering goth-itude to please the emo-tweens, CRASH LOVE is less mannered than its predecessor and reveals a band exploding with a creative power pop and metal spark. Though lead singer Davey Havok's glitter-goth persona is well intact, it seems tempered here with a bit more punkish muscle and '80s pop croon.
