"Trouble Is..." was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
After releasing a debut that drew raves from people such as James Brown and B.B. King, Kenny Wayne Shepherd followed it up with an album that demonstrates how much musical growth this childhood prodigy has experienced in two years. On TROUBLE IS..., Shepherd's playing still reflects the huge influence of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan (particularly on the instrumental title track that finds him joined by Double Trouble and Reese Winans), but new singer Noah Hurt also colors everything with a growl reminiscent of Paul Rodgers.
Moving slightly away from the country-blues of LEDBETTER HEIGHTS, Shepherd's strong rhythmic touch shines on everything from juke-joint exercises ("[Long] Gone" with James Cotton) to the transformation of Dylan's "Everything's Broken" into a roadhouse rave-up. Although this Shreveport native's guitar lends itself to more up-tempo material (check out "Chase The Rainbow"), slower songs are where the 20-year old digs deep into the heart of the blues. The pure emotion found in "Blue On Black" and "I Found Love (When I Found You)" shows that Shepherd can carry on the legacy of the blues for many years to come.

| | Howlin Wolf His Best CD (1997)
Boy Prostitute
$12.79 Recorded between 1951 & 1964. Includes liner notes by Mark Humphrey.
Since even Howlin' Wolf's worst recordings are compelling in some regard, it should go without saying that HIS BEST, a collection of his finest Chess sides, is magnificent from beginning to end. Possessed of fine guitar and harp skills, a voice that could separate skin from bone, and a sheer magnetism and charisma that knew (and has known) no equal, Howlin Wolf is one of 20th century music's greatest performers.
Every track here is stellar, and a few like "Evil," "Smokestack Lightnin'," "Back Door Man" and "Spoonful," will have listeners wearing out the repeat button on their disc players. Wolf's ferocious delivery can inspire terror and delight ("Three Hundred Pounds of Joy") equally, and the power of his voice can make you want to shout, laugh, cry or destroy some property. Though true fans may want to investigate the individual albums, HIS BEST is a consistently untouchable collection.

| | Junior Wells Hoodoo Man Blues CD (1965)
Boy Prostitute
$9.85 HOODOO MAN BLUES is one of the great albums from the era of classic Chicago blues. Though usually overshadowed by mid-century Chicago legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells ranks among the most dynamic and satisfying performers of the milieu, and his explosive harmonica playing and charismatic vocals come through like gangbusters on this 1965 release. The record has the added distinction of being one of the first long-playing blues albums to hit the scene (blues had largely been confined to 45s prior to its release).
The sessions benefit from notably clean production and fine musicianship (Buddy Guy appears on lead guitar). The band is energetic and plays with equal parts precision and abandon, creating the perfect canvas for Wells's sly, sexy frontman antics. Unlike a lot of his contemporaries, Wells was not afraid to incorporate the influence of R&B and rock & roll ("Snatch It Back and Hold It"), and his music has an accessible edge as a result, though he downshifts to slow-burn blues with perfect ease ("In the Wee Hours"). Sometimes fiercely electrifying, sometimes as laid-back and gauzy as barroom ...

| | Craig Wisda Let It Be CD (2007)
Boy Prostitute
$15.15 In honor of the 23rd anniversary of the Replacements' third album, Craig Wisda has titled his fourth CD "Let It Be." This is an eclectic mix of Rock, Electronica, Folk, Soul, Disco, Reggae, Progressive, Spaghetti Western and Salsa music. This isn’t the Greil Marcus in-depth analysis of Craig’s latest CD, but here are some thumbnail impressions: Let There Be Light - cool opening ...couldn’t make out all the lyrics but I hear classic Wisda themes of despair and light...sin and redemption Anymore - nice pop intro -- Nick Lowe-ish. Cool story song...nice rhythm and musical textures. I like the tarmac, blackjack rhymes...rely...barfly...fall guy...bayonet...brunette…very Dylanesque Find My Way - nice funky groove, reminds me of Talking Heads --a touch of Grateful Dead harmonies. Good lyrics, nice vocals. Meanwhile - like the Santana-style guitar intro. Nice melody. Nice shift in the bridge. Great guitar solo Confess Your Love - cool dance-rocker with kind of atonal shadings - Bowie-esque -- good hook Conflicted and Confused - I like the clean sound, pop melody, and clear vocals. A little bit like Misfits-era Kinks, good lyrics, nice harmonies. I like the bass line Complicated - nice catchy song, I like the reggae feel -- nice lyrics, love the back-up vocals, very, very catchy. Could have been on Jimmy Cliff’s “Harder They Come” soundtrackFree - nice sounding track, guitars sound good, nice dynamics -- sounds like classic Wisda themes of truth and lies, freedom and redemption Electronic Race - nice instrumental, Townshend-like combo of acoustic and electric, ala “Tommy” Alabaster Box - reminds me a bit of Cream stuff, maybe it's the wah-wah, sound of the vocal and some of the lyrics. Alabaster Box is a cool image, not sure what it means, but it's intriguing Ya Callate! - great ...
