Where CONTRABAND sounded, logically enough, like a mash-up of Stone Temple Pilots' alterna-rock angst and Guns N Roses' Rolling Stones-derived hard-rock swagger, LIBERTAD sounds much more like the work of a cohesive band with a singular vision. There are many elements of 1970s arena rock on LIBERTAD, not least in the respectful cover of the Electric Light Orchestra's "Can't Get It Out Of My Head," whose power-ballad charms are echoed in the originals "The Last Fight" and "Gravedancer." Elsewhere, speedy, punky tracks like "She Builds Quick Machines" and "Let It Roll" underscore McKagan and Weiland's roots in the Seattle underground of the 1980s prior to their later mainstream success. "Get Out the Door" showcase's Slash's still considerable chops.
Given the dismal track record of supergroups in general and the well-known personal difficulties of Velvet Revolver's frontman in particular, many listeners assumed that 2004's CONTRABAND would be a one-off experiment. However, the album was commercially and artistically successful enough that the core trio of Scott Weiland, Slash, and Duff McKagan stuck together to create the even better follow-up, LIBERTAD.
Velvet Revolver: Scott Weiland (vocals); Dave Kushner, Slash (guitar); Duff McKagan (bass instrument); Matt Sorum (drums).
Rolling Stone (p.90) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]here is plenty of thrill in the fuzz-lined hard-rubber bends of Slash's guitar breaks and the way bassist Duff McKagan keeps time." Entertainment Weekly (p.136) - "Stop pining for a new Guns N' Roses release, break out your air guitars, and bask in the glory of LIBERTAD." -- Grade: A- Uncut (p.118) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "From anyone else, these tales of strip-club sirens and lost souls would be wish fulfillment. For VR, they're diary entries." Libertad Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews 5 star album....really!?!? if this is such an awesome album then why did slash call it "weak." well, mainly it is. after releasing the album he said in an interview that he wanted VR to sound just like guns n' roses. also stating that his vision did not come through and it does not come close to the work he did with guns. kinda makes you think why slash, duff, and matt left Gn'R to make a band to sound like Gn'R???? axl is Gn'R. he named the band and owns the rights. also a better album than this. hell, even crazy scott weiland walked out on these brain dead rockstars..lol. "libertad" is a overall weak, lame, guns coverband. how can all these great guys suck soooo bad. 1st axl sux...now scott sux. this band can not make up their mind. who's next...brett michaels...LMAO. slash, duff, and matt can keep on TRYING to sound like guns n' roses but i'll stick with axl cause' the new REAL Guns N' Roses album blows away slash, duffs solo albums. along with all that VR crap. because AXL rose SOUNDS and will ALWAYS be Gn'R. "you should of known better." Submitted by Buckethead (mars,LA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

An All Around Excellent Sophmore Effort! Velvet Revolver's second cd release titled "Libertad" proves the band is here to stay. Much better in my opinion than their debut, "Libertad" has a number of good all around rockers like "Let It Roll", "Mary Mary", "She Builds Quick Machines", and "American Man". Heck even their cover of ELO's "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" is dang good. Considering the music industry is putting out mostly the latest & greatest crap these days, this cd is a breathe of fresh air. Submitted by Holly ("Santa Fe, N.M., USA") Was This Review Helpful? Libertad music CDs
$11.75 To its legion of fans, everything the band Tool does is an event, but the elaborate plan behind their sporadic release schedule--roughly five years, on average, between albums--is due primarily to the time and effort the band packs into each successive effort. To title their fourth album 10,000 DAYS, then, isn't as much an exaggeration as it would seem. Tool are America's ...
| | Rush Snakes & Arrows CD (2007)
Libertad songs
$11.25 In the five years since their last full studio album, a covers EP (2004's FEEDBACK) and two live releases (2003's RUSH IN RIO and 2005's R30) hardly sated the throngs of Rush fans hungry for new music. SNAKES & ARROWS is all they could have possibly hoped for and dreamed about. The brash, contemporary vibe of 2002's VAPOR TRAILS has been shed as the trio returns to the polished production and complex arrangements of their most beloved works.
Woven into the later-era Rush song stylings are no less than three instrumentals: "The Main Monkey Business" (a hard rocking full-band workout), "Hope" (a solo acoustic guitar piece written and performed by ...

| | Best Of Edgar Winter CD (2002) Remastered
Libertad songs
$7.59 Recorded between 1970 and 1981. Includes liner notes by Edgar Winter and Lawrence Cohn.
While some might argue that one reasonably well-compiled Edgar Winter best-of is enough, Sony Legacy follows Rhino's 1986 Collection with this 2002 edition, which only shares six tracks with its predecessor. With liner notes and involvement from Winter, this might be a little closer to what he would like to be remembered by, and since all of his best work was recorded for Epic, there are no cross-licensing issues complicating matters. But that doesn't mean it's better. There are some major differences; Rhino chose the 17-minute live "Tobacco Road" from Roadwork, while this sticks with the shorter studio version from the Entrance album. The Best of Edgar Winter also nabs two other tunes from that debut, which Winter is clearly proud of according to his album notes. But neither the title track nor the jazzy seven-minute "Fire and Ice" gels with the rockin' gospel of White Trash or the pop/rock of They Only Come out at Night, making the sequencing rough going. The cheesy disco of "It's Your Life to Live" has not aged well and its inclusion here is puzzling, especially when nothing from the relatively well-received Shock Treatment album is included. "Rock and Roll Revival" seems forced and stiff, yet picking "Harlem Shuffle" from Edgar and Johnny Winter's only joint album, Together, is a smart addition. Oddly neither disc selected Edgar Winter's live version of "Rock and Roll, Hootchie Koo," a perplexing omission. Since this new compilation doesn't improve on Rhino's, its appearance is difficult to understand. While the sound quality might be slightly crisper due to technological improvements over the years, there's no other reason to choose this over the previous version, which, as of its appearance in 2002, was still in print and track for track is a more enjoyable listen. ~ Hal Horowitz

| | Violent Femmes CDs (1983) Bonus CD; Deluxe Edition
Libertad album
$11.99 Recorded between 1981 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Michael Azerrad.
An undisputed classic of the American rock underground, the Violent Femmes' 1982 self-titled debut still shines with its original luster. Quirky, catchy, innovative, and explosive, the Femmes made what was probably the first acoustic punk-folk-rockabilly-New Wave document for the dispossessed. The formula is as ingenious as it is simple--a trio playing guitar, bass, and drums runs through songs of adolescent angst, vulnerability, and social/sexual frustration.
In addition to their distinctive, minimal sound--guitarist Gordon Gano's rhythmic chord progressions filled out by Brian Ritchie's fluid bass and Victor De Lorenzo's aggressive brushwork on the drums--it is Gano's singing and superb songwriting that earmarks VIOLENT FEMMES. For the most part, Gano sounds like a psychotic, self-pitying, hormonally crazed teenager as he whines, stutters, and yowls his way through these remarkable songs. This two-disc deluxe edition includes rarities and live tracks, in addition to the paranoid "Kiss Off," the slinky "Gone Daddy Gone," and the lusty "Add It Up." And, of course, anyone who was a teenager in the '80s knows the glorious "Blister in the Sun," a seemingly permanent staple of dance venues across the United States.
