Over three years since the Ananda Project's last full-length album, the lengthy, seamlessly eclectic Fire Flower neatly encapsulates the smooth, groove-oriented chillout vibe endemic to Chris Brann's vision. Moving easily from micro-genre to micro-genre between tracks, with Terrance Downs and Heather Johnson, as always, handling the lion's share of the vocals, Fire Flower never sounds like a mishmash of currently fashionable ideas. Brann has developed not only a trademark sound but also a subtly effective set of alterations that keeps the Ananda Project sounding fresh, and Fire Flower is as good as anything the producer has yet created. Although the album works beautifully as a whole, the particular standouts are first single "Into the Sunrise," a showcase for Downs that is likely the closest thing to a genuine pop single the Ananda Project has yet managed, and the ambient closer "Remember When." ~ Stewart Mason
"Fire Flower," Ananda Projects highly-anticipated follow up to "Morning Light," has finally blossomed. Brainchild of producer, Chris Brann, this third full-length artist album on Nite Grooves, solidifies his standing at the forefront of modern dance music production. "Fire Flower" contains 14 original works and blends such styles as Future Jazz, Neo-Soul, Deep House, Ambient, R&B, Broken Beat, Salsa, & Funk into a cohesive listening excursion. Ananda Project supports a cast of outstanding vocalists with mainstays Terrance Downs & Heather Johnson having top-billing.

Fire Flower CD music
$15.79 Just as Chris Brann followed up his debut album, Release, with a remix collection, Re-Release, he followed up his second album, Morning Light, with Relight, a seamlessly mixed collection of remixes from that album that comes with an accompanying bonus disc of yet more remixes, these dating from between 1998 and 2005. All of this amounts to a whopping 22 tracks of Ananda Project, almost of all of which, amazingly, are on a par with Brann's standard output, if more inclined toward dancefloor play. For that reason, those who prefer his up-tempo house work over his more chilled-out album-listening work will savor the first disc of Relight, as it plays like a standard DJ mix, albeit one of nothing but Ananda Project tracks and one that lets the tracks play out to near-end before a quick fade (that is, DJ mixing that emphasizes the tracks, not the mixing itself). A few of the tracks are previously unreleased, including the back-to-back run of "Wasting My Love" and ...

Fire Flower music CDs
$15.65 This is a good if rather scattershot compilation of early Allen Toussaint productions for various artists, focusing solely on his 1960-65 work, when he was at the helm of the best rock and soul recordings to come out of New Orleans. About half of the 22 tracks are devoted to the most well-known artists in his charge, including a few well-known cuts, like Benny Spellman's "Fortune Teller," Ernie K-Doe's "A Certain Girl," and Irma Thomas' "Ruler of My Heart." The rest of the names might be strange even to New Orleans experts, encompassing as they do the likes of Curly Moore, Willie West, and Zilla Mayes. So it's almost as though this can't make up its mind whether to be a best-of for his vintage years, or an overview mixing classics with rarities. Nonetheless, it's a good if slightly uneven patchwork, usually boasting Toussaint's inimitable blend of fine pop melodies, lazy bluesy funk, and a certain light production touch in which the music sounds both spontaneous and cleverly arranged. If you've already picked up the best early sides by Thomas, Aaron Neville, Spellman, K-Doe, and Hill, you're likely to be most intrigued by the dozen cuts by the no-names, some of them quite good, and most ...
| | Pet Projects: The Brian Wilson Productions CD (2003)
Fire Flower songs
$15.05 Brian Wilson did quite a bit of production work outside of his main gig with the Beach Boys, especially in the early to mid-'60s. This 23-track collection -- entirely drawn from pre-1966 releases, except for a 1969 single by the Honeys and a 1973 single by American Spring -- doesn't round up all of them, as some were unavailable for contractual reasons. But it's a good anthology of this facet of Wilson's career, with many obscure songs that are difficult to find and have been seldom reissued. As is usually the case for outside production/songwriting ventures by major stars, few of Wilson's non-Beach Boys ventures were hits, and in fact none of the items on this CD were. As is also usually the case in these situations, the material (frequently though not always written or co-written by Wilson) was more lightweight than what was being devised for the figure's principal project, the Beach Boys in Wilson's case. But this disc is still pretty enjoyable, featuring as it does a few genuinely outstanding cuts in which Wilson got to tinker with some production approaches. Foremost among these is Sharon Marie's 1964 Ronettes sound-alike single "Thinkin' Bout You Baby," which has a verse that was reworked with some changes to provide the Beach Boys' 1968 hit "Darlin'." Also of special note is Glen Campbell's 1965 single "Guess I'm Dumb," which has a confessional lyric and orchestral pop/rock production on par with the Beach Boys' own best album tracks of the period. Only slightly below this level is Gary Usher's 1964 single "Sacramento," which actually sounds a little more personal than much of the Beach Boys' output of that year. Brian Wilson himself is heard on the one-off 1964 single by the Survivors, with an A-side ("Pamela Jean") with an identical melody to that used for the Beach Boys' "Car Crazy Cutie," and an instrumental B-side ("After the Game") that's a vague forerunner of the lush instrumentals on Pet Sounds. The other tracks on this compilation are ...
