One of the most well known figures in pop/R&B-leaning jazz, saxophonist David Sanborn had a highly successful stint with the Warner Bros. label from the mid-1970s to the mid-'80s. This collection draws 16 tracks from that period in Sanborn's career, with songs ranging from the funky "Chicago Song" to the smooth "Lesley Ann" to the spare, delicate "Lotus Blossom." For listeners whose only connection to jazz is via Kenny G, this Sanborn sampler is the next logical step.

Upon the release of this debut album, Massachusetts native Dar Williams quickly won comparisons to Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. Such assessments are complimentary, but Williams doesn't take herself quite as seriously as those seminal soprano folksingers. Williams has a wicked sense of humor. She delivers her witty story-songs in a conversational manner, accompanying her clear, high voice with clean acoustic guitar. Sisters Katryna and Nerissa Nields provide backup vocals on several songs.
Williams is blessed with an excellent memory of her childhood experiences and with a vivid imagination. In "When I Was a Boy," she sings about her adolescence as if she had grown up male. It's a shame that the Germs are better known for their trashy, charismatic singer Darby Crash's demise than for their music, because M.I.A.: THE COMPLETE ANTHOLOGY proves that they were easily one of the best bands on the LA punk scene in the late 1970s.
