(6 Customer Reviews)
On his second studio album, RELENTLESS, Georgia-born performer Jason Aldean doles out a lively set of restless country tunes. Admittedly a fan of hard-rock acts such as Guns N' Roses, the young singer isn't afraid to feature prominent drums ... Full Descriptionand amped-up guitars, as best revealed on the rollicking hit single "Johnny Cash," which sounds more like Big & Rich than the late Man in Black--not a coincidence, since the former act's John Rich co-penned the tune. Even the gentler numbers on RELENTLESS bristle with energy, as on the lovelorn "Who's Kissing You Tonight," reinforcing Aldean's reputation as a harder-edged country star on the rise. Relentless album
$10.45 Jason Aldean has been slugging it out as a professional singer since high school, and the confidence gleaned from years of experience shines though on his self-titled debut album, as he delivers a strong collection of blue collar-themed songs in a smooth, polished tenor. Lyrics about philosophical farmers ("Amarillo Sky"), small-town pride ("Hicktown"), and moments of spiritual insight ("Good to Go") are backed by twangy, honky tonk-ish Telecaster licks and rock-influenced country rhythms of the Alabama/Sawyer Brown variety. "Asphalt Cowboy" is a contemporary update of classic 1970s lonesome-trucker songs (complete with weeping steel guitar), while "You're The Love I Wanna Be In" borrows licks from 1980's AOR power pop of the .38 Special/Rick Springfield mold. Chock full of variety and energetic performances, JASON ALDEAN is a great introduction to a promising talent.

| | Carrie Underwood Some Hearts CD (2005)
Relentless CD music
$10.45 Country purists may take offense at finding American Idol winner Carrie Underwood's debut album in the country section. An unabashedly manufactured commercial product, SOME HEARTS is the sound of mainstream country in the 2000s heavily steeped in glossy pop. There's nothing downhome or roots-conscious about Underwood's voice or looks: she's the pretty blonde next door with a fine singing voice, but the powers that be have made her a country artist, and that's what the public gets.
None of this is to say that SOME HEARTS is not a good pop album. The combination of Underwood's considerable gift and the slick, spot-on production of Dan Huff and Mark Bright makes for a fine package. Even on somewhat by-the-numbers tunes (like her smash hit "Inside Your Heaven"), Underwood sings with conviction, and she does well with both the ballads and the uptempo tracks. Idol viewers and fans of artists like Faith Hill and Shania Twain will want to check this out.

| | Sugarland Enjoy The Ride CD (2006)
Relentless music CDs
$9.95 With the departure of founding member Kristen Hall, Sugarland slimmed down to a duo. Losing one-third of the formula that made their debut a country/pop crossover smash might seem a daunting proposition, but ENJOY THE RIDE finds remaining members Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush not only surviving but thriving. Nettles's brassy belting has more sass and sex appeal than ever, and the in-your-face attitude on many of the pair's songs is even more brash and boundary-pushing than the most full-throttle moments on 2004's TWICE THE SPEED OF LIFE. While the uptempo tracks indicate that Sugarland has been paying attention to the Gretchen Wilson/Big & Rich camp, ...
| | Kellie Pickler Small Town Girl CD (2006)
Relentless songs
$10.75 Part of the Great AMERICAN IDOL album flood of late 2006, Kellie Pickler's solo debut features a winning set of country-pop tunes. Even though many other celebrated former contestants on the reality-TV show issued records around the same time, the North Carolina-based ...
| | Tim Mcgraw Let It Go CD (2007)
Relentless album
$15.65 On his first album in nearly three years, Tim McGraw delivers more of the rock-influenced country that has made him one of Nashville's biggest stars, but in a more reflective, at times almost somber, mood. The title track sets a tone of heartbreak and unspecified desperation that's amplified through the album's other 12 songs. Even the traditional duet with McGraw's wife, the eternally sunny Faith Hill, is darker than usual: "I Need You" flirts with themes of addiction and helplessness, as does the rock-edged "Between the River and Me." In this context, the album's first track and leadoff single, the Big Kenny co-write "Last Dollar (Fly Away)," has a slightly weary vibe underscoring its good-times surfaces. Other highlights include the respectful tribute "Kristofferson," a version of Lori McKenna's "I'm Workin'," and the powerful "Nothin' To Die For," which encapsulates the undercurrent of desperation throughout the album as a whole. While not a cheerful listen, LET IT GO is a complex and ultimately hopeful album that ranks among McGraw's finest and reveals a previously unknown artistic depth.

| | Miranda Lambert Crazy Ex-Girlfriend CD (2007)
Relentless CD music
$12.39 With her first hit single "Kerosene," Miranda Lambert introduced a wild-eyed country gal persona that suddenly made supposed bad girl Gretchen Wilson seem about as staid and conservative as Reba McEntire. Lambert's follow-up album, 2007's CRAZY EX GIRLFRIEND, maintains that image: In the title track and first single, Lambert herself is the title character, addressing her former flame's new girlfriend in slightly unhinged terms. The equally crazed opening track "Gunpowder and Lead" is even more threatening. Elsewhere, however, Lambert shows a ...
