| | Nouvelle Vague New Wave CD Nouvelle Vague Discography of CDs
With this set of cover songs by new wave artists and the film music covers collection Coming Home, Nouvelle Vague's Marc Collin and DJ Gilles LeGuen move beyond the bossa nova-meets-post-punk concept of Nouvelle Vague's first two albums. Nouvelle Vague's ability to find just the right songs shines through on all of their releases -- even when their interpretations of the songs falls a bit short -- so it makes sense that the simply named New Wave is worth hearing. That these tracks are also reinterpretations is a clever nod to the group's origins, but it never feels too contrived. The mix of popular and obscure artists on New Wave shows how good Nouvelle Vague have become at being curators: mixing Devo's famously mechanical take on "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," Gary Numan's icy "On Broadway," and Nico's imperious version of "Heroes" with Polyphonic Size's "Mother's Little Helper" -- which rivals the Normal's "Warm Leatherette" for the title of new wave's frostiest song -- and Karel Fialka's almost comically doomy "People Are Strange" makes for just the right mix of familiarity and discovery. Telex's vocoder-riffic "Dance to the Music" and the Slits' breathless, intense "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" are some of the other standouts from a collection that manages to put a fresh twist on new wave compilations. ~ Heather Phares

Purchase New Wave CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
New Wave album
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. It's an affirming story, but that's all it would be if Cash didn't sing her heart out here. The opener, a version of Jimmie Rodgers' "Miss the Mississippi and You," is full of comfortable grace and sentiment, and Cash keeps that ...
| | Them Crooked Vultures CD (2009) (Import)
New Wave CD music
$13.05 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, ...

| | The Ultimate Bee Gees CDs (2009)
New Wave songs
$20.15 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, whereas this opens with the bright, fabulous ...
| | Beatles Rubber Soul CD (1965) Limited Edition; Remastered; Digipak; Enhanced CD
New Wave album
$14.09 This reissue of RUBBER SOUL has been digitally re-mastered. It comes packaged with replicated original U.K. album art, an expanded booklet containing original and newly written liner notes, and rare photos. Limited quantities of the CD are embedded with a brief documentary film about the album.
Though some might argue that the Beatles' unprecedented evolution from British Invasion pin-ups to pop music visionaries began with BEATLES FOR SALE, RUBBER SOUL is without a doubt the first album to definitively put the Fab Four in the running for Greatest Band Ever. Virtually every aspect of the Liverpool quartet's incredibly diverse sound is in evidence here: the dark, irony-filled Dylanism ("Norwegian Wood," "Nowhere Man"), pop perfection ("In My Life"), the passion for classic tin pan alley balladry ("Girl," "Michelle"), and the love ...
| | Rolling Stones Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!: In Concert CDs (1970) With Book; With DVD; Anniversary Edition; Limited Edition
New Wave CD music
$72.19 Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York on November 27-28, 1969.
Returning to the American concert scene after a three-year layoff, the Rolling Stones recorded GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! during a triumphant two-date stand at Madison Square Garden in late November 1969 that found B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner opening for them. Having amassed an impressive recorded output during their three years away from touring, the Stones peppered their sets with hits, including "Honky Tonk Women," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and "Street Fighting Man." Tipping their collective hats to Chuck Berry, the band also included covers of "Carol" ...

| | Anders Dahl Hundloka, Flockblomstringa 1 CD (2006) (Import) Sweden
New Wave album
$15.75 Continuing in the vein of previous releases, on Hundloka, flockblomstringa 1 Anders Dahl works to balance found sound environmental recordings with instrumental work to create an often soothing collage of atmospheric drone. Less immediate than some of the harsher field tape work the 21st century has produced, Hundloka could just as easily be a traditional studio recording at many parts, but whatever the exact origins of any particular piece, Dahl's skill at creating something quietly attractive most often makes for good enough listening. All three tracks are called "Hundloka," further identified by the exact instruments that went into their creation. Opening "Guitar, Bouzouki, Violin, Prepared Speakers" plays around the most with older styles of recorded meditation, with some instruments sounding like sitars while ...
