When 2004's BARRIO FINO became one of reggaeton's best selling albums, and one of the genre's defining documents, Daddy Yankee was elevated to iconic status. That status was helped by the release of BARRIO FINO EN DIRECTO, a set of live recordings, videos, and new singles released in 2005, but fans had to wait until 2007 for a new studio album. That wait was rewarded with EL CARTEL: THE BIG BOSS, a collection that arguably tops the now-classic BARRIO FINO in ambition and appeal.
At 80 minutes and 21 tracks, EL CARTEL is a sprawling achievement, offering up no shortage of skittering, head-nodding beats, lightning-quick rhymes, and colorful, genre-twisting samples. The album features numerous collaborations with U.S. pop musicians, including Fergie, Akon, will.i.am, and others, ensuring Daddy Yankee's crossover success with English-language audiences, and broadening the artist's already widespread international appeal. Over half the album's tracks sound tailor-made for the singles chart, and its wild, danceable grooves and top-tier production throughout makes it a prime candidate for the summer party album of 2007.
Personnel: Yanira Torres, Ana Paula Torres, Yosef Torres, Gilda Gonzales, Wifey (vocals); Jose Ruiz (trumpet); César Ayala (trombone).
Additional personnel: Hector el Father, Fergie , Akon, William , Nicole Scherzinger.
Not The King Of Reggaeton This Cd has 3 good songs in it Impacto, Bring it On, Ella me levanto, the rest aren't good songs. Daddy Yankee isn't the King Of Reggaeton anymore. Submitted by Johnny N (Miami, Florida) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 3 of 4 found this helpful.
Good I think that DY is still the best. His lyrics and concepts are still the best out there. He should've used more collab with LunyTunes though. Some of the beats don't sound strong enough.. and the hip hop is just whack... but, this cd is really good. Submitted by bacano-inc (El Paso, Tx, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Top-Notch 5/5. A little different kind of reggaeton but very good, and Zion's is very good too 5/5 but slower and romantic. Makes us kinda hungry for the regular, hardcore reggaeton, eh? :p Get Cambio, Ella Me Levanto, En Sus Marcas Listas Afueras, TENSION- Daddy rocks this beat with "El Father". Under-rated, and great 3.6 stars average is really low. This album is certainly much better than that, and is one of the best reggaeton CDs of the year.
To get all of the bad stuff out of the way: the 'regular' version of "Impacto" isn't all that great. Thankfully, the remix has a lot more "bang," though Fergie could've been used more in it.
Now, all the good stuff. Track #2, (En sus marcas...) is an instant hook. "Ella me levanto" is a great song, and DY fuses merengue and reggaeton perfectly. All the songs with guests are worth a listen as well. Three of best in the whole CD are near the end: "Coraza Divina," a salsa-like song, salsa-like song, "Plane to PR," a funny song with a good message, and "Me Quedaria," about the challenge of coming to the US to make a living. There's lots of variety in this album (the classic rgtn beat gets the boot in many tracks, for ex.), as well, so those h8rs out there can shut it.
My 5 fav (there are plenty more):
1) Coraza Divina
2) Me Quedaria
3) Ella Me Levanto
4) El Celular
5) Impacto (remix)
But buy it, seriously. Submitted by Alex (Springfield, VA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 2 of 4 found this helpful.
