Although jazz fusion guitarist Charlie Hunter appeared on the scene in the mid 1990s with a specially constructed eight-string guitar that allowed him to play basslines, rhythm parts, and solos essentially simultaneously, the San Francisco-based ... Full Descriptionartist is talented enough as both a player and composer not to fall into the novelty trap that Stanley Jordan, for example, found hard to escape. Balancing a productive career as a frontman with his lucrative sideman roles for the likes of Norah Jones, MISTICO finds Hunter in basic power-trio format, this time favoring a seven-string guitar that obviates the need for a bassist. The 10 tracks range from the funky, danceable "Wizard's Sleeve" to the pensive "Ballad," but overall, Hunter is in a rock-oriented mood here, not unlike the Bad Plus.

Hunter's done some editing, and the pith of his approach creates many perks." JazzTimes (p.72) - "[I]mpressive....MISTICO's songs dress up in rock and roll's rawness and power." Mistico album
$13.15 Though he's often classified as a fusion guitarist, Charlie Hunter has none of the penchant for overplaying that frequently accompanies practitioners of the genre. Recorded in New Orleans, COPPEROPOLIS has a vibrant looseness and good humor that manifests itself in pieces like "A Street Fight Could Break Out" and the second-line beat of "Swamba Redux." Hunter's sidemen, horn and keyboard player John Ellis and drummer Derrek Phillips, supply an empathetic bedrock accompaniment that colors the guitarist's lyrical, deceptively simple phrasing on tracks like "Drop the Rock" and the band's Latin- and New Orleans-influenced treatment of Thelonious Monk's "Think of One."
Charlie Hunter Trio: Charlie Hunter (8-string guitar); John Ellis (melodica, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone, Wurlitzer piano); Derrek Phillips (drums).

Mistico CD music
$11.99 Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood: John Scofield (guitar); John Medeski (keyboards); Chris Wood (bass instrument); Billy Martin (drums, percussion).
2006's OUT LOUDER marks the second collaboration between New York's downtown avant-groove trio Medeski, Martin & Wood and guitar giant John Scofield. The band backed Scofield on his 1997 outing A GO GO, but the results here surpass even the scintillating outcome of their first meeting. With musicianship of this caliber, however, and a collective sensibility that favors experimentation, genre-blending, and surprise, it's easy to expect great things.
OUT LOUDER serves up a respectable amount of MMW's much-loved funk-based vibe, especially on tunes like the opener, "Little Walter Rides Again," and "Tootie Ma is a Big Fine Thing," which work bluesy, New Orleans-styled grooves to crackling effect. But the vast range of the artists' taste is also evident, from Miles-inspired rock fusion to Ornette Coleman-tinged free jazz to transformed covers of tunes by the Beatles and Peter Tosh. Adventurous, textured, and accessible, OUT LOUDER is a heady and fun recording that advances the already sterling reputations of its participants.

| | Clash Cut The Crap CD (1985) (Import) Limited Edition; Remastered; Japan
Mistico album
$28.89 Although 1982's COMBAT ROCK signaled the last time the original lineup of the Clash would record together in the '80s, 1985's CUT THE CRAP was officially the band's last gasp of that decade. After COMBAT ROCK, crafty songwriter and experimentalist Mick Jones was forced out of the Clash--going on to form the outstanding hip-hop/rock hybrid Big Audio Dynamite--and drummer Topper Headon was similarly exiled. Remaining Clashers Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon recruited Nick Sheppard, Pete Howard and Vince White in an attempt to keep the band alive and kicking.
The resulting CUT THE CRAP seems more attached to Strummer's eventual solo efforts than a real Clash album; despite Strummer's determined effort, in many ways the band seems to be a lonely shadow of its more volatile self. While the glorious, grating Stummer vocals enliven tracks like the reggae-tinged "This Is England" and the anthemic "Movers & Shakers," the absence of the more melodically inclined Jones is clearly noted. Although CUT THE CRAP features the Clash's usual, heady mix of politics and punk, it falls somewhat short of the band's outstanding classics THE CLASH and LONDON CALLING.

Mistico Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Infectious Bay area guitarist Charlie Hunter is well acquainted with New Orleans and its abundant crop of musical talent. He has been a staple at local nightclubs during the Jazz Fest season and his past collaborations have included many Crescent City musicians, most notably drummer Stanton Moore with whom Hunter has performed and recorded with widely. It’s no surprise that Hunter once again dipped into the wellspring of local talent for his new album Mistico, which features Hunter playing 7-string guitar (a change from his usual 8-string axe) alongside keyboardist Eric Deutsch and Louisiana drummer Simon Lott.
Lott, who has been impressing New Orleans audiences since moving here from his native Baton Rouge four years ago, is a strong presence on Mistico. His raw, energetic playing gives the trio a straightforward, hard-rocking edge that sets this group apart from previous ensembles that have borne Hunter’s name. He also brings a touch of second line to the album, most notably the tracks “Wizard Sleeve” and “Chimp Gut.” To further establish the sound of his new trio, Hunter abandoned the bubbly, jam-friendly guitar tone that defines his numerous Blue Note recordings. Instead, he employs a crunchier sound which often blends seamlessly with the varied tones from Deutsch’s electric keyboard.
Mistico is, at its base, an instrumental pop album made interesting by creative, forward-thinking musicianship and a healthy dose of psychedelic nuance. The three musicians succeed in playing as one on the new album, focusing less on flashy solos and more on creating a series of changing moods and textures, all with an infectious underlying pulse.
