Charlie Hunter Trio (Guitar): Charlie Hunter (7-string guitar); Simon Lott (drums); Erik Deutsch. Personnel: Erik Deutsch (piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Simon Lott (drums). Audio Mixer: Scott Harding. Recording information: Bedfordstudio, Brooklyn, NY (02/2007). Photographer: Michael Weintrob. Although jazz fusion guitarist Charlie Hunter appeared on the scene in the mid 1990s with a specially constructed eight-string guitar that allowed him to play basslines, rhythm parts, and solos essentially simultaneously, the San Francisco-based artist is talented enough as both a player and composer not to fall into the novelty trap that Stanley Jordan, for example, found hard to escape. Balancing a productive career as a frontman with his lucrative sideman roles for the likes of Norah Jones, MISTICO finds Hunter in basic power-trio format, this time favoring a seven-string guitar that obviates the need for a bassist. The 10 tracks range from the funky, danceable "Wizard's Sleeve" to the pensive "Ballad," but overall, Hunter is in a rock-oriented mood here, not unlike the Bad Plus. Despite lineup changes, Charlie Hunter's trio has always consisted of a sax player and a drummer in addition to Hunter's seven- or eight-string guitar heroics. After about a decade with that template, John Ellis added a bit of keyboard and melodica to his sax for Copperopolis, almost presciently setting the stage for Mistico. With Ellis moving on to concentrate on a solo career, Hunter decided to form a brand new trio, bringing in Simon Lott on drums and Erik Deutsch on keyboards. That's right: no sax. The varied keyboards vs. sax give the album a sound that's less overtly jazz than previous efforts, but Copperopolis also showcased Hunter and company in more of a rock mood and that trend continues on Mistico. Hunter also brought in Scott Harding (aka Scotty Hard) to co-produce, pushing the envelope a bit and bringing some of the subtle magic studio touches he has used with the likes of Sex Mob, DJ Logic and Medeski, Martin & Wood. Hunter always gets great tone, whether playing with tremolo ("Estranged"), wah-wah/fuzz ("Special Shirt") or a nice distorted twang ("Balls"). His whole playing concept is totally unique and impressive from both a technical and musical standpoint. Deutsch switches freely between piano and Rhodes, sometimes adding some more spaced out sounds via Casio and acting as a worthy foil to Hunter's guitar. Lott is in the pocket all the way, giving the tunes just what they need rhythmically (and even getting a brief solo on "Spoken Word"). And it's another great set of songs too, from the soul-influenced "Speakers Built In" to the slow and slinky title cut (with cool dub effects) to the rocking "Balls" and the loopy melody of "Wizard Sleeve." Mistico is another winner from a guy with an uncommonly consistent track record of quality releases. The Charlie Hunter Trio is dead. Long live the Charlie Hunter Trio. ~ Sean WestergaardDown Beat (p.62) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he disc reaches for clarity and attains it. Hunter's done some editing, and the pith of his approach creates many perks." JazzTimes (p.72) - "[I]mpressive....MISTICO's songs dress up in rock and roll's rawness and power." Charlie Hunter Mistico Songs Mistico Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Infectious Bay area guitarist Charlie Hunter is well acquainted with New Orleans and its abundant crop of musical talent. He has been a staple at local nightclubs during the Jazz Fest season and his past collaborations have included many Crescent City musicians, most notably drummer Stanton Moore with whom Hunter has performed and recorded with widely. It’s no surprise that Hunter once again dipped into the wellspring of local talent for his new album Mistico, which features Hunter playing 7-string guitar (a change from his usual 8-string axe) alongside keyboardist Eric Deutsch and Louisiana drummer Simon Lott.
Lott, who has been impressing New Orleans audiences since moving here from his native Baton Rouge four years ago, is a strong presence on Mistico. His raw, energetic playing gives the trio a straightforward, hard-rocking edge that sets this group apart from previous ensembles that have borne Hunter’s name. He also brings a touch of second line to the album, most notably the tracks “Wizard Sleeve” and “Chimp Gut.” To further establish the sound of his new trio, Hunter abandoned the bubbly, jam-friendly guitar tone that defines his numerous Blue Note recordings. Instead, he employs a crunchier sound which often blends seamlessly with the varied tones from Deutsch’s electric keyboard.
Mistico is, at its base, an instrumental pop album made interesting by creative, forward-thinking musicianship and a healthy dose of psychedelic nuance. The three musicians succeed in playing as one on the new album, focusing less on flashy solos and more on creating a series of changing moods and textures, all with an infectious underlying pulse.

Personnel: Charlie Hunter (guitar); John Ellis (melodica, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone, Wurlitzer organ); Derrek Phillips (drums). Recording information: The Truck Farm Studios, New Orleans, LA. Though he's often classified as a fusion guitarist, Charlie Hunter has none of the penchant for overplaying that frequently accompanies practitioners of the genre. Recorded in New Orleans, COPPEROPOLIS has a vibrant looseness and good humor that manifests itself in pieces like "A Street Fight Could Break Out" and the second-line beat of "Swamba Redux." Hunter's sidemen, horn and keyboard player John Ellis and drummer ...

Mistico
$47.19 Personnel includes: Kirsty MacColl (vocals), Johnny Marr (guitar), David Gilmour, Robbie McIntosh. This 1991 album by singer Kirsty MacColl features 22 remastered tracks, including "Free World" and "Fifteen Minutes." This UK edition features 10 additional tracks. CD contains 10 bonus tracks. Audio Mixer: Colin Stuart. Audio Remasterer: Steve Rooke. Recording information: Ealing Studios; Rak Studios; The Townhouse. Photographer: Charlie Dickins. Only Kirsty MacColl's second solo album in the tenth year of her career (she took several years off to have children after marrying producer Steve Lillywhite), 1989's Kite is the pinnacle of her achievement. By far her best-sustained work, this lengthy 15-track album features some of the singer/songwriter's best work on both sides of the hyphen. Her always-terrific vocals -- MacColl was quite likely the best female singer of her generation -- are overdubbed several times on most tracks to create thick, lush harmonies, most notably on the gorgeous cover of the Kinks' "Days." Her songwriting is excellent as well, with some of her sharpest and cleverest words and most memorable melodies found here. The piercing ...
