Years before Amy Winehouse garnered international attention with BACK TO BLACK, the sassy British soul singer put herself on the U.K. music map with her 2003 debut, FRANK. Nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize, the record glides along on the subtly jazzy production of Salaam Remi, which allows Winehouse's expressive voice, strongly influenced by Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington, to shine, particularly on the trip-hop-tinged "Stronger Than Me," the powerful "You Sent Me Flying," and the sultry "I Heard Love Is Blind." Although not quite as consistent or daring as her subsequent album, FRANK is an impressive first outing that should win over anyone swooning from BACK TO BLACK.
Aged just nineteen, Amy Winehouse has caused great ripples in the UK urban music scene. With a voice that falls happily in with any one of the contemporary greats whilst somehow managing to sound entirely unique, Amy's smoky soul stylings are set to turn the ripples to a storm. 'Frank', her debut set, is an empowering collection of independence anthems all laid down with the kind of maturity & inflection that make the likes of, say, Norah Jones such a tantalizing proposition. Furthermore, with the likes of Giles Peterson championing her cause, it won't be long until the world is gently awakened to the Winehouse way of doing things. This UK version features an exclusive bonus track, 'Moody's Mood For Love'. Island. 2003.Entertainment Weekly (p.79) - "[The album] bristles with intelligence....On this jazzier debut, she's closer to Sade..." -- Grade: A- Frank Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) Amazing voice Miss Winehouse has a rare voice with soul, deep soul pours out of her voice. she is truly true talent. I hope she can fight back against the drugs because it would be a waste. Can't wait for the next album!!! Submitted by Adena (Philladelphia, PA) Was This Review Helpful? GENIUS if she lives.... She is our generation's little sparrow....our PIAF.

$18.15 | | Amy Winehouse Back To Black CD (2006)
Frank album
$12.49 BACK TO BLACK's production is an artful blend of sophisticated '60s R&B and 21st-century stylistic poaching, with "Tears Dry on Their Own" incorporating elements of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," and Winehouse sounding like Billie Holiday fronting a reggae band on the old-fashioned cheating song "Just Friends." Densely packed with musical history and often conjuring a dark, Portishead-esque atmosphere, BACK TO BLACK is a sumptuous-sounding collection freighted with blunt confessionals of a lush life.
It doesn't take much listening to Amy Winehouse's 1960s pop period piece to realize that this is a tribute with an edge--nice girls back then didn't sing about boozing and rehab. Since her 2003 debut album, FRANK, Winehouse has been a frequent presence on the gossip pages of the U.K. tabloids, and her songwriting here candidly reflects her experiences with drinking, sex, and drugs.

| | Robert Plant Raising Sand CD (2007)
Frank music CDs
$14.69 Those who find the pairing of '70s rock god Robert Plant with contemporary bluegrass queen Alison Krauss unlikely have probably not been paying attention to Plant's latter-day work, which is full of intimate, acoustic-flavored balladry. While the organic-sounding, low-key Plant/Krauss collaboration, RAISING SAND, is a far cry from Led Zeppelin's stadium rock, it offers up some hauntingly moody textures that should appeal to "Battle of Evermore" admirers.
Consisting mostly of sagely chosen cover tunes, the album finds Plant and Krauss bringing their warm-but-eerie harmonies to everything from Townes Van Zandt's nihilistic folk poetry ("Nothin'") to the crumbled beauty of latter-day Tom Waits ("Trampled Rose"). Determined not to rest on their laurels or cater to expectations, the 59-year-old ...
| | Bruce Springsteen Magic CD (2007)
Frank songs
$11.29 Following up two folk-flavored albums, MAGIC finds Bruce Springsteen laying down his acoustic guitar to reclaim his rock-hero crown. He's assisted in this endeavor by producer Brendan O'Brien, best-known for big-time '90s hard rock, but the results have little in common with O'Brien's grungy past. Instead, MAGIC's sonic blueprint is more in line with Bruce's last stadium-rock statement, 2002's THE RISING. The album is front-loaded with hard-charging, heavy-riffing tunes ("Radio Nowhere," "You'll Be Comin' Down") that benefit from the sure-fire attack of the E Street Band. In fact, "Livin' in the Future" harks back to the band's vintage '70s work.
MAGIC isn't all back-to-basics rockers, though; evocative ballads that employ atmospheric string arrangements indicate that Springsteen is content neither with standing still nor with looking backwards. One of the most rewarding aspects of the album is the fact that after the relative tunelessness of 2005's DEVILS & DUST, Bruce seemingly learned from the folk gems he covered on his Pete Seeger homage a year later, and started writing arresting melodies again. Any way you look at it, those who may have been put off by Springsteen's previous stylistic diversions will have a welcome feeling for MAGIC.
Personnel: Bruce Springsteen (vocals, guitars, harmonica, pump organ, synthesizer, glockenspiel, percussion, background vocals); Stevie Van Zandt (guitars, mandolin, background vocals); Nils Lofgren (guitars, background vocals); Clarence Clemons (saxophone, background vocals); Roy Bittan ...

Frank music CDs
$9.79 This budget-priced Collection features 18 seemingly random tracks from '90s British trad rock outfit Ocean Colour Scene. While it may pique the interest of someone who has never heard the group, it pales in comparison to 2001's Songs for the Front Row: The Very Best of Ocean Colour Scene, which was as streamlined a sampler as one could hope for. Fans looking for something with a little more weight should check out 2003's two-disc Anthology. ~ James Christopher Monger
