From the summer of 1966 pianist Bill Evans and bassist Eddie Gómez worked with an amazing series of drummers. Alphabetically they are Jack DeJohnette, John Dentz, Joe Hunt, Philly Joe Jones, Shelly Manne, Marty Morell, Alex Riel, and Arnie Wise. The musical chemistry between Evans, Gómez, and Morell was exceptional, and this trio stayed together from 1968 to 1974, which amounts to somewhat of a longevity record for Evans and his perpetually permuting ensembles. Broadcast live via Radio Canada International from Camp Fortune, Ottawa, in August 1974, the performance documented on this disc was one of the last that these three musicians would ever give as a unit, for Morell would soon cut himself loose to be replaced in 1975 by Eliot Zigmund, who stayed on with Evans until 1979. The trio sounds exceptionally fine; Gómez in particular is magnificent, especially his arco passages. Live in Ottawa is essentially a sequel to the album Blue in Green. Unlike some other archival Bill Evans recordings, the sound quality is excellent. The same can be said for bonus tracks ten through 13, retrieved from a performance presented by WNDT television in New York on September 17, 1972. Among the many posthumously released recordings by Bill Evans, this one is highly recommended, as it is cleanly remastered, dynamically exciting, and artistically rewarding. ~ arwulf arwulf
This Canadian concert was performed shortly before drummer Marty Morell's departure, and therefore, boasted a well-rehearsed unit. The concert issued here was one of two performances recorded during that engagement, although not a single tune was played twice. Our concert, taken from a radio broadcast, has been long unavailable and appears here on CD for the first time ever. As a bonus to this rare concert, we have added the soundtrack from a TV show featuring the same Bill Evans trio, recorded in New York on September 17, 1972. Gambit. 2007.
Recording information: Camp Fortune, Ottawa, Canada; New York, NY.
