Brazilian vocal sextet BR6 excel at complex arrangements that reveal new subtleties and layers of old songs, and on this novel mix of George Gershwin and Antonio Carlos Jobim tunes (it makes more musical sense than it would seem) their lush harmonies practically reinvent such chestnuts as "Someone To Watch Over Me" and "The Girl From Ipanema."
BR6: Crismarie Hackenberg (mezzo soprano); Marcelo Caldi (tenor); Augusto Ordine, Deco Fiori (baritone); Simo (bass voice); Naife Simoes (unknown instrument).
Global Rhythm (Publication) (p.54) - "[T]he collection jumps off with a blend of 'Rhapsody In Blue' and 'Waters Of March.' From there, we get a selection of tunes that includes a heartfelt rendition of 'Someone To Watch Over Me'..." Gershwin & Jobim: Here To Stay
$9.89 Acoustic-guitar virtuoso Kaki King's sophomore effort improves on the dynamic instrumental compositions of her debut to include a wider range of textures, moods, and ever-evolving structures. King is also backed by a cadre of supremely sensitive musicians on LEGS TO MAKE US LONGER, and the cello, violin, upright bass, and drums add rich, complex color to King's already-sophisticated playing. Except for an electric guitar on the eerily quiet "Can the Gwot Save Us?" and King's under-the-radar singing on "My Insect Life," the spotlight is on the guitarist's stunning technique, which, even through its rapid-fire bass lines and ringing harmonics, never sounds flashy or forced.
Based on the meditative, space-filled opener, "Frame," listeners might associate King's work ...

| | Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered
Gershwin & Jobim: Here To Stay
$6.39 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane and Cannonball--that some thirty-plus years after its initial release, KIND OF BLUE is still recognized as Davis' point of departure towards jazz's less-explored regions.
Bill Evans' translucent chords and Paul Chambers' famous bass ...
| | Melody Gardot My One And Only Thrill CD (2009)
Gershwin & Jobim: Here To Stay
$12.25 Although the plaudits for Melody Gardot's debut album, WORRISOME HEART, were entirely justified, it sometimes seemed as if the young singer-songwriter's compelling personal story--hit by a car and severely injured at the age of 19, the aspiring fashion designer began playing piano and writing songs as part of her physical therapy--overshadowed her music. Gardot's second album, ...
| | South CD (1999)

| | Medeski, Martin & Wood Uninvisible CD (2002)
Gershwin & Jobim: Here To Stay
$11.95 On their eighth studio release, the experimentally inclined jazz-rockers Medeski, Martin, and Wood open up their organ-trio sound in new and unexpected ways. Trading in their earlier, groove-oriented sound for a more eclectic interest in moods and melodies, the group finally dives headlong into the hip-hop and electronica vibe it's been sniffing around at least since 1998's COMBUSTICATION. On tracks like the hypnotic "Retirement Song" or "Pappy Check," the polyrhythmic scratching of guest turntablist DJ Olive isn't employed for sonic color, ...
