A Treat From Long Ago
As a fan of all 3 of these musicians from back in the '70s (and McLaughlin to this day), I'm certainly glad that JM gave these tapes another listen and decided they were worth using modern tech. for a restoration project (and the resulting sound is excellent). The muscianship of all 3 men is amazing and their interaction a treat for any fan's ear. This one is to be recommended! I do wonder if any of those old jams with Jimi might be worth a restoration treatment...

Lost Treasure
Mclaughlin,Pastorius,Williams. What a trio, what a lost treasure that was found from a concert of long ago! The blend, energy of these legendary artists, two of which are deceased, makes you wonder why it took so long to release the tapes???? It takes you to a time when fusion, jazz rock, spiritual energy and vibes were kicking.True afficionados will be grateful for some new directions painted by these masters.Enjoy!

Delivers the goods
I was pleasantly entertained by how this CD blended very tight arrangements with improvisation. It seemed to be mainly high energy (which I like). The mellow sections did not overstay their welcome either!
The sound was surprisingly in-your-face without loosing the live ambiance.
Great release. I can't think of anything wrong with it, so I give it 5 stars.

I Wish I'd Purchased Something Else
I think the world of these players and have been listening to them for ages. But I found this recording, of a live performance coupled with studio versions of the same tunes, unrewarding. There are some nice moments of course. Just not enough of them for me. I wish I'd purchased a Weather Report recording, or a Mahavishnu recording or something else.

Dark Prince
Top five live jazz recordings of ALL TIME.
Live recording in Cuba, Dark Prince:
Williams, Pastorious pushing Mclaughlin like never before in the hardest driving post bop trio performance ever. Charlie Parker would've been smiling and tearing up listiening to this, and would've joined in like a lightening bolt.
a true treasure.
