Given You Nothing album
$10.95 The Senegal-born vocalist (and reigning king of cameo appearances) takes a sensitive turn on his third LP, FREEDOM. From the outset, Akon seems to have spurned his earlier hip-hop tendencies in favor of an electric Euro-pop production. The bouncy, synth-driven opening cut, "Right Now (Na Na Na)," produced by Giorgio Tuinfort, seems aimed at European dance floors while the soft techno beat of "Beautiful" sounds like an interpolation of Alice Deejay's hit "Better Off Alone." Similarly, the oversexed subject matter of past hits like "Smack That" and "I Wanna Love You" takes a back seat to apologetic lost-love yearning and reverent pleas for reconciliation on tracks like "Keep You Much Longer," in which Akon declares "Wish I could stop by and maybe say hi/Wish I could stop by and lay by your side." Still, there's room for pseudo-gangster posturing and good-life boasting ...
| | Notorious B I G Ready To Die CD (1994) With DVD; Reissue; Remastered
Given You Nothing CD music
$13.35 Once he stepped out onto the scene as the rapper on the remix of Mary J. Blige's hit single "Real Love," many hip-hop fanatics anxiously awaited the debut of The Notorious B.I.G. a.k.a. Biggie Smalls. Their prayers were answered with READY TO DIE, fifteen tracks of uncut, hard-core, lyrically sophisticated rap all complemented by hypnotic beats supplied by the underground's most prominent producers. READY TO DIE resumes where his "Juicy" single left off, but separates itself from the array of hip-hop albums that don't live up to the initial hit.
Blowin' up the charts using his knowledge of the streets and hard bangin' snares provided by producer Easy Mo Bee, the Bedford-Stuyvesant native Notorious B.I.G. is far from "Ready To Die." Not since the likes of Slick Rick has there been an artist so successful in the storytelling genre of rap music, creating a mental picture of life in the heads of his listeners. The up-tempo "Gimme The Loot" illustrates the hustlin' ways of a trigger-happy robbery expert stressed from the "Everyday Struggle" of life. The recurrence of the Isley Brothers tune "Between The Sheets" adds to the charm of "Big Poppa," where Biggie portrays his "player" image. No need to skip any songs, READY TO DIE is packed with hits all the way through.

| | Leona Lewis Spirit CD (2008)
Given You Nothing songs
$12.29 British popster Leona Lewis became a superstar in the U.K. after winning on the TV program X Factor, releasing the chart-ruling hit single "Bleeding Love," and following up with a full-length debut that broke British sales records. That album, SPIRIT, hit America in the spring of 2008. The album is full of bubbly pop and R&B that might elicit comparisons with the music of Mariah Carey or Alicia Keys. Lewis received no shortage of help from industry heavy-hitters, including OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder (who co-wrote "Bleeding Love"), as well as songwriters Akon, Ne-Yo, Josh Alexander, ...
| | Michael Jackson Bad CD (1987) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Special Edition
Given You Nothing album
$10.89 Digitally remastered by Bernie Grundman (Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles, California).
Jackson's domination of the world record market continued following Thriller, although by comparison it was an almighty flop with only 12 million sales. As Pink Floyd and Dire Straits have proved, one album can go completely sales haywire without necessarily being any better. The title track and the gorgeous "Man In The Mirror" were substantial hits, but quality material such as "Dirty Diana" and "Liberian Girl" bolster a strong album. Jackson also seemed to have found the romance he seeks in "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" and "The Way You Make Me Feel." Regardless of his press, history clearly shows that he has made a lot of people very, very happy.
Additional Tracks
Recorded at Westlake Audio Studios, Los Angeles, California. Originally released on Epic (40600).

| | Booker T Potato Hole CD (2009)
Given You Nothing CD music
$13.79 Though 21 years separate POTATO HOLE from R&B organ master Booker T.'s last album without his beloved M.G.'s, he wasn't exactly sitting on his hands in the interim, and his keyboard work here is full of the visceral charge that's made him a soul legend since his 1960s Stax days. The Drive-By Truckers and Neil Young stand in for Booker T.'s longtime bandmates, but they wisely avoid aping that band's classic sound. Instead, there's a harder, rock-edged, guitar-based (even Mr. T. plays a little six-string) approach here. Booker T. wrote most of this all-instrumental album's tracks himself, but there are a couple of left-field cover tunes, including new labelmate Tom Waits's bluesy "Get Behind the Mule" and Outkast's pop/hip-hop crossover smash, "Hey Ya." But whatever material he's working with, Booker T. knows how to put his Hammond to work, delivering tasty licks with nary a single note ...
