If the former members of Soundgarden wished to reunite without their original singer, Operator's Johnny Strong would likely top the list of potential candidates. At times, Strong delivers a vocal sound that is such a dead-ringer for Chris Cornell's singing style and tonality that an untrained ear would be seriously challenged to tell them apart. Joining Strong for SOULCRUSHER (the band's debut) is former Puddle Of Mudd guitarist Paul Phillips. The album grooves with emotionally driven, radio-friendly hard rock not unlike...er...Soundgarden.

At this stage of her career Mariah Carey does not need to prove herself, but her voice is so powerful that with each new recording she, once again, reminds you: "Listen to what I can do." Vocal gymnastics and Christmas songs are not often thought of as a compatible combination, but on MERRY CHRISTMAS Mariah jumps, climbs, crawls, twirls and dashes her way through both traditional fare and original Christmas songs.
She shifts through styles, offering fans from all musical camps a gift of their own. Her "Silent Night" shows off a studied vocalization where liquid phrasing is key. "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" shows off a dynamic voice that is hard to match. She has fun with the Phil Spector goodie "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," a song straight out of '60s girl-group heaven. As leader of the Gregg Gelb Swing Band, director of the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra, a founding member of the NC Jazz Repertory Orchestra, a jazz educator, and leader of numerous ad-hoc small groups, Gelb is, by example, an advocate for the music. With "Breakaway" (MG Records) , he cuts to the heart of his experience - a quartet blowing session with seven of his original compositions. Most of the tunes are singable, and Gelb offers warm-toned improvisation on each. His solos balance lyricism and fluid double -time passages. His rhythmic feeling is straight-ahead and swinging."Summer Haze,'" the lone clarinet performance, conjures up an exotic mood similar to Benny Carter's "Key Largo." "Big Change's Comin'" is the kind of swinging tune you can imagine the Count Basie Band playing.
