Although many fans have been waiting around for Interpol to replicate the magic of their 2002 debut TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS, the band deserves credit for not overtly aping the formula of that album. On 2007's OUR LOVE TO ADMIRE, as on the group's sophomore effort ANTICS, Interpol endeavor to stretch the fabric of their classic 1980s post-punk sound while leaning toward straightforward pop territory. They succeed, to a large degree, thanks to a major label budget (the band moved to Capitol for this release) and a strong batch of material.
None of this is to say that Interpol aren't still rooted in the dark dramatics of Joy Division, the band's primary influence, as the gloomy, churning "Pace is the Trick" and "Wrecking Ball" prove. But the upbeat feel of "The Heinrich Maneuver" and the thumping groove and catchy hooks of "No I in Threesome" show a fresher-faced Interpol, as do the ambitious production flourishes of tunes like opener "Pioneer to the Falls." The album's nicest surprise comes at the end: "The Lighthouse" is a spare, emotionally affecting song, lovely and haunting, illustrating--as the rest of the album does--the band's continued ability to captivate.

CMJ (p.42) - "Interpol devilishly fuses their love for the macabre with richly textured instrumentals." Good but not great Our Love To Admire is lacking that beginning-to-end-take-you-on-a-ride continuity that the first two albums offered. It's more of an 'experimental' offering which sometimes succeeds (The Scale is simply amazing) but also fails (Mammoth - I always skip this drawn out beat me over the head song).
But a so-so Interpol album still beats the hell out of the drivel you hear out there on a daily basis. Submitted by Mark (Canada) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
A modest failure This is what Joy Division might have sounded like 15 laters after settling in a semi-mature REM influenced sound. This is a very weak album because they should be capable of much more than this based on their first two albums. Several songs sound like outtakes from REM's Monster album and the production quality is also equally weak. Also, the comparisons being made to the Editors are completely invalid who by the way bettered their excellent debut album. Submitted by Jack (Boston, MA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
Not As Good As The First Two, But Still Great! I was captivated by "Antics" when I first got into Interpol back in 2004. Then I got "Turns Off The Bright Lights" and I fell in love. Interpol is such a good band. Paul's lyrics and tones are so different. Being a singer and rhythm guitarist myself, I am greatly influenced by Paul's ways with music. I waited for a new album from the band since last year. When I heard "Our Love To Admire" came out, I bought it before even sampling some tracks. I'm a true fan. I was not dissapointed the least bit after listening to it. "Pioneers To The Fall" is a great introduction to the album. It starts off slow, then gets harsh with Sam's drumming and Carlos' bass riffs. "There's No I In Threesome" is also a good track with its poppy beat and mellow dramatic tone and aura. "The Heinrich Manuever" is just too good to put into words. I love how they stop, then come back with a breakdown at the end. "Rest My Chemistry" is my favorite. It's slow yet strong. In all, "Our Love To Admire" is still a good album. It's a little different from the other two, but they still have their glow. I saw them in concert back in September and they were the bomb. I know they will continue to play good music that they love for us to admire; and also love to play. Submitted by Jeremy (Raleigh, NC) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 0 of 1 found this helpful.
Not bad but not on par with the others This is a decent album but doesn't live up to the expectations I had after hearing "Antics". It sounds like outtakes from that album, and few of the songs are very memorable. Submitted by richard (Fairfax, VA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 0 of 1 found this helpful.
Antics to admire Ok let me just say this is by no means a bad album. In fact its pretty good. But its only "pretty good" after about 5 spins and thats not how I remember Antics or Turn on the bright lights. Both albums are great albums and highly recommended in particular Antics. What I loved about both albums and Interpol in general is their intense sound that they had on the previous records. On admire they have employed keyboards and I guess that was to gather more intensity and moody atmosphere. I dont think its worked as well as it could have, instead its made the riffs more catchy which isnt a bad thing but I dont think it compliments the bleak vocals as well as the previous Interpol offerings. Still this a very strong album and should be listened to and I guess I am being a little hard here but I expect almost perfection from these guys! New Interpol listeners should check out Antics first. For everyone else give Our love to admire a go. Submitted by Daniel L (Sydney Aus.) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 0 of 1 found this helpful.
