| | John Coltrane My Favorite Things: Coltrane At Newport CD (2007) Remastered
Expectation
$7.79 Coltrane performs here with his classic quintet--bassist Jimmy Garrison, pianist McCoy Tyner, and drummer Elvin Jones. On the '63 date, Roy Haynes sits in for Jones, and Haynes's effect on the music (he has a lighter touch and is more of a colorist) will strike the ear of those who know this period of Coltrane well. Another stand-out quality of the disc is the extended jam on "Impressions," released here for the first time in its entirety. The playing is transcendent throughout, making the disc a winning purchase for any Coltrane fan, not just collectors.
By his 1963 appearance at Newport, John Coltrane had already embraced the sinuous, exploratory modal form that marked his most striking recordings. MY FAVORITE THINGS: COLTRANE AT NEWPORT brings together performances from two of the legendary saxophonist's appearances at the Newport Jazz Festival: one from 1963 and the other from 1965. The set lists contain only a few extended ...
| | Sol Serenade 2008 EP CD (2008)
Expectation
$9.35 Based in Portland, Oregon, Sol Serenade formed in the spring of 2007. After relocating from the Great Lakes region, singer/songwriter Mike Struwin met guitar player Daniel Fretto and drummer Demetrius Keller. Driven by their love for music, they began polishing their sound.Beginning with Struwin\'s extensive original song list, they began rehearsing, writing, arranging, and gigging with bassist Rick Bouvette and vocalist Karen Mathews under the band name Beacon. Their self recorded demo includes the song \"Manistee\" which is in regular rotation on Internet Radio IO in the jam bands category thanks to DJ Rob Bleetstein. In April of 2008, Sol Serenade set-out to record songs for their first Album. The band set up shop at Portland\'s Creature Sound with engineer Mike Naramore and enlisted Daniel\'s long time friend and band mate to thump the sub-frequencies, internationally renowned bassist, Damian Erskine.Other awesome musicians featured on this album include: Alex Shakeri of The Insomniacs at the keys, Paul Brainard of Pu Pu Platters on pedal steel, Paul Hoffman from Greensky Bluegrass pickin\' mandolin, and Sol\'s newest and VERY welcome full time band member, Arcellus Sykes on bass. Damian left some pretty big shoes to fill and Arcellus fits into them ...
