"Ten winning tracks that bring the pop guitar instrumental sound into the now."Guitar trendsetters from Hank Marvin to blues-pop wizard Danny Kirwan and Michael Rother will tell you that when it comes to instrumental guitar music, it’s often the mood and melody that define the song’s essence. Rounding out the latest batch of guitar originals on his fourth solo CD Starting Now, guitarist Bryon Thompson puts a fresh spin on his cover of Danny Kirwan’s Fleetwood Mac classic “Sunny Side Of Heaven.” Rising to the occasion by composing ten more instrumentals worthy of sitting alongside this guitar-based, melodic Kirwan masterpiece is no easy feat, yet after giving Starting Now a few spins it’s clear that Danny would no doubt approve of Bryon’s latest album. Ten winning tracks that bring the pop guitar instrumental sound into the now, the 2007 release of Starting Now is a great starting point to discover the guitar craft of Bryon Thompson.Robert Silverstein20th Century Guitar magazineMusic Web Express 3000 - www.mwe3.com Bryon Thompson Starting Now Songs | 1. | Starting Now |

| | Yes 90125 CD (2009) Gold
Starting Now
$19.98 When Jon Anderson rejoined Yes after DRAMA, he was inserting himself into an unusual situation. Keyboardist Geoff Downes and longtime guitarist Steve Howe had left to form Asia with prog rock vets John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music etc.) and Carl Palmer (ELP). Chris Squire and Alan White brought original Yes keysman Tony Kaye back and recruited vibrant young Australian guitarist/vocalist/composer Trevor Rabin. The quartet had already begun writing and recording, but Anderson was able to insert himself into the proceedings with such ease that the new combination sounds completely natural on 90125.
Mostly, the band was concerned ...
| | Michael Buble Crazy Love CD (2009)
Starting Now
$15.05 Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over the top for sure, but Bublé takes you to the edge of the cliff, prepares to jump, and then gives you a knowing wink that says, not quite yet -- there's more fun to be had. And what fun it is with Bublé swinging through "All of Me," and killin' Van Morrison's classic "Crazy Love" with a light and yearning touch. And just as "Home" worked to showcase Bublé's own writing abilities, here we get the sunshine pop of "Haven't Met You Yet" -- a skippy, jaunty little song that brings to mind a mix of the Carpenters and Chicago. Throw in a rollicking and soulful duet ...

| | Atlas Sound Logos CD (2009)
Starting Now
$11.64 Bradford Cox was a virtual song machine during the time between Deerhunter's CRYPTOGRAMS and the Atlas Sound's LOGOS, churning out officially released material as well as plenty of songs only available on his blog. Over that span of time, he became a finer and more fluid songwriter, and his music emerged from the experimental fog of his earlier work just enough to give listeners tantalizing glimpses of almost ridiculously catchy songs. LOGOS keeps this push-pull between challenging and charming, yet Cox's second solo album still feels more experimental than Deerhunter, if only because he seems completely unfettered by any kind of rules or concerns about consistency. These songs barely sound like each other, yet they all sound like Cox. LOGOS comes into focus slowly with its first three songs. "The Light That Failed"'s hazy atmospheres slip effortlessly into "An Orchid"'s spectral recall of MICROCASTLE's psych-pop, but it's "Walkabout," Cox's irresistibly sunny collaboration with Animal Collective and Panda ...
| | Pink Martini Splendor In The Grass CD (2009) Digipak
Starting Now
$13.14 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. ...
