(1 Customer Review)
With 2007's YOUNG MODERN, Australian trio Silverchair move still further away from the derivative grunge sound that typified their early releases. The band's fifth studio album is remarkably ambitious, not least for its impressive roster of sonic architects and collaborators. Producer Nick Launay (Talking Heads), mixer David Botrill (Tool), and legendary arranger Van Dyke Parks all lend their talents to YOUNG MODERN's landscape.
There's not a trace of the band's once prominent guitar-heavy sludge, and even the opening rocker, "Young Modern Station," bounces along with a pop glee. "Straight Lines" soars with melodic, heady bliss, while "If You Keep Losing Sleep" plays like a compressed song cycle. It may be Parks's influence, but the ghost of the Beach Boys floats through the album's falsetto singing and dreamy tunes. Closer to XTC than Nirvana, Silverchair take a significant stride forward with this release.
Silverchair are Australia's most successful rock band with five #1 albums and global sales of over 6 million CDs. 'Young Modern' is the fastest selling album of the band's career in their homeland - propelled by the #1 hit single 'Straight Lines'. It also features orchestral arrangements by legendary Beach Boys collaborator Van Dyke Parks. Look for Silverchair on a North American summer tour that includes a Lollapalooza appearance alongside acclaimed artists Arcade Fire and Bright Eyes. The set includes a DVD with making of the album and music video.
Silverchair: Daniel Johns (guitar); Chris Joannou (bass guitar); Ben Gillies (drums).
Additional personnel: Luke Steele (guitar); Alain Johannes (slide guitar); Michelle Rose (pedal steel guitar); Matt "Hippie" Appleton (brass); Paul Mac (keyboards); Nayo Wallace, Elysa Gomez (background vocals); Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
Rolling Stone (p.72) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Aggressively modern...from the balled-fist fuzz of 'Mind Reader' to the sumptuous glam of 'Strange Behaviour,' and the glassy jangle of 'Waiting All Day.... Uncut (p.65) - "MODERN is a polished glam-rock suite, boasting more ecstatic melodies and colorful riffs than their four previous efforts combined." -- Grade: A- Kerrang (Magazine) (p.48) - "[A] weird vaudeveille record of Beatles-esque whimsy, complete with masterful orchestrations and tumbling, epic songs whose vision is so off-kilter as to be wonderfully unique." Young Modern album
$9.58 After 40 years, a number of ill-conceived posthumous albums, and countless bootlegs, one would almost have to be skeptical of a new album billed as "12 previously unreleased studio recordings -- almost 60 minutes of unheard Jimi Hendrix!" The good news is that Valleys of Neptune largely delivers on that promise. Even hardcore collectors will likely be surprised at how much of this album they haven't heard. But much of this material has been available before in some form, official and otherwise. Although there were tons of posthumous overdubs, elements of these very versions of "Stone Free" and "Hear My Train Comin'" were used as building blocks for the versions on Crash Landing and Midnight Lightning, respectively. Additionally, this version of "Stone Free" was included on 2000's The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set, the only difference being that Noel Redding's bass and vocals were replaced with Billy Cox's bass from a slightly later studio session. An excerpt of the tune "Valleys of Neptune" was released as part of the Lifelines radio program box set, but that track ("Mr. Bad Luck" [aka "Look Over Yonder"]) and "Lullaby for the Summer" (basically an instrumental version of "Ezy Rider") were all well-known to collectors. However, Eddie Kramer's fresh mixes make them all sound better than ever. "Fire," "Red House," and "Sunshine ...
| | Michael Jackson Thriller CD (1982) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Special Edition
Young Modern CD music
$6.06 The finest example of perfect disco pop, and a record that should be prescribed to musical snobs and manic depressives. The album is a true ambassador of what pop music can be. Jackson whoops and dances through a suite of unforgettable melodies that should be danced to with a smile on your face. Each track offers at least one musical hook, whether it is the beauty of 'Human Nature' (who can resist the 'dada dada da da da') or the 'whoo whoo' of 'Billie Jean'. It's all too good.
Off the Wall was a massive success, spawning four Top Ten hits (two of them number ones), but nothing could have prepared Michael Jackson for Thriller. Nobody could have prepared anybody for the success of Thriller, since the magnitude of its success was simply unimaginable -- an album that sold 40 million copies in its initial chart run, with seven of its nine tracks reaching the Top Ten (for the record, the terrific ...

With Queen officially enshrined in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Hollywood Records reintroduces the band yet again with the release of GREATEST HITS I, II & III. While Volumes I and II are full of Queen classics you already know by heart, the third cobbles together odds and sods from the far corners of Queen's canon along with solo cuts from Freddie Mercury and Brian May.
Opening with the operatic rock classic "Bohemian Rhapsody," it's easy to hear not only how this British quartet achieved the kind of global acclaim that ensured they'd be enshrined alongside the likes of the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. When they weren't dabbling in playful '50s-flavored rock & roll ("Crazy Little Thing Called Love"), catchy glam ("Killer Queen"), or hard-edged funk ("Another One Bites The Dust"), Queen was capable of delivering heartfelt love ...

Young Modern CD music
$9.89 PARANOID proved to be Black Sabbath's most focused, consistent, and successful record. Leaving behind the amorphous, extended jams of their debut for focused songs and a more structured sound, Black Sabbath virtually wrote the book on heavy metal with the ominous, unforgettable riffs, thunderous rhythms, and dark themes on this release. There ...

Young Modern songs
$13.19 Ah, what to make of Orange Goblin -- a band that's almost always produced good, sometimes great, but rarely categorically excellent music over the course of a decade and five CDs, which saw them slowly transition away from the fading stoner/doom movement that originally inspired them before reaching something of a creative impasse on 2004's Thieving from the House of God. If anything, that album's more traditional but also less distinctive brand of heavy rock and metal was largely offset by the upside that was guitarist Joe Hoare's successful handling of all six-string duties, following the departure of co-founding guitarist Pete O'Mally. But its long awaited successor, Healing Through Fire, has no such excuse for not delivering the goods -- especially after marinating for a whole three years. Here, once again, Orange Goblin appear committed to treading the heavy metal middle ground, yet listeners may still spot a few subliminal signs of stoner rock hiding just beneath the surface of tracks like "Hot Knives and Open Sores" (featuring an inverted Trouble riff) and epic closer "Beginner's Guide to Suicide" -- not to mention vocalist Ben Ward flirting with a low-slung growl, reminiscent of Clutch's Neil Fallon on occasion. But with the possible exception of uniquely memorable opener "The Ballad of Solomon Eagle" and the also stoner-reminiscent "Cities of Frost," typical new efforts like "The Ale House Braves," "Hounds Ditch," and "They Come Back" mostly just sound belabored, stunted, even mediocre, before second-half thrash-outs manage to break them out of their dispiriting rut. OK, so the aforementioned Hoare once again deserves credit for his one-man power chord tour de force, plus surprising forays into acoustic classicism ("Mortlake (Dead Water)") and twangy swamp blues ("Beginner's Guide to Suicide" again), but in most other respects, Healing Through Fire only illustrates Orange Goblin's "always good, sometimes great, rarely excellent" dilemma. Who else wants to bet that their next album will mark a full-scale return to stoner rock? [Special editions of Healing Through Fire also boast a bonus DVD containing ...
