Jazz saxophonist and M-Base figurehead Steve Coleman has dipped his stylistic fingers into everything from funk to free jazz to West African influences. INVISIBLE PATHS: FIRST SCATTERING (2007) finds Coleman performing unadorned. The 16 solo saxophone pieces that comprise the disc veer from frenetic flutter to sweet lyrical sweep. Titles like "Shift," "Embodiment," and "Clouds" hint at the abstract, poetic nature of the performances, which owe a good deal to the exploratory nature of free jazz improvising, but without that genre's occasional tendency to alienate.
Recording information: Systems Two, Brooklyn, NY (03/28/2007/04/10/2007).
Personnel: Steve Coleman (alto saxophone).
Liner Note Author: Steve Coleman.

Invisible Paths: First Scattering
$13.89 This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris Potter and Robin and Duane Eubanks, Antonio Hart, Steve Nelson, Josh Roseman, Billy Kilson, Taylor Haskins, Gary Smulyan, Jonathan Arons and Alex Sipiagin. The music centers around the opening four-part "Monterey Suite," a tour ...

| | Dave Holland Critical Mass CD (2006)
Invisible Paths: First Scattering
$13.59 One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibist/marimbaist Steve Nelson, or drummer Nate Smith. Each player is provided with ample moments in which to take charge, and not fleeting, gratuitous moments but rather significant chunks of solo/lead space. Holland's belief in sharing extends to the area of composition as well. Each bandmember contributes one piece to the album (Holland does claim the other four, however) and, more often than not, uses that opportunity to shapeshift, to push the band -- ...
| | Charles Mingus At Ucla 1965 CDs (2006)
Invisible Paths: First Scattering
$15.85 Originally released as "Music Written for Monterey 1965 Not Heard... Played In Its Entirety At UCLA. Vols 1 ans 2"
The back story behind this concert CD is that, in September 1965, Charles Mingus performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival. He had done so triumphantly well the year before, however, Mingus' 1965 set was inexplicably cut short at a half-hour (Mingus himself claims 20 minutes) and so the material he had planned for the event, much of it newly composed, was instead unreeled at UCLA a week later. Mingus later pressed a couple hundred copies of the performance into a self-released two-LP set, but the master tape was hence destroyed and the album basically forgotten until its release on CD by Mingus' widow Sue in 2006. Fans of the musically peripatetic Mingus will marvel when they partake of this intimate "lost" music; despite its often unfinished, raw quality, it's powerful stuff -- at least when it's not falling apart for all to hear. On this rare document -- a complete Mingus concert, including dialogue, ...
