Anathema music CDs
$14.29 The brief jump blues craze spearheaded by the Brian Setzer Orchestra petered out in the mid-'90s but someone forgot to tell Canadian guitarist JW-Jones. His fourth release is a logical extension of 2004's My Kind of Evil as Jones brings the six-piece Wind-Chill Factor Horns, along with legendary Ray Charles' tenor saxman David "Fathead" Newman, to enliven the proceedings. The result is a nearly-70-minute set of rollicking, generally upbeat brassy blues and bluesy jazz, performed with such gleeful enthusiasm that most listeners won't mind that the songs, the majority of them Jones originals, are a bit on the generic side. Close your eyes and you'd think you are listening to a well-recorded disc from the '50s as Jones tears into zippy instrumentals such as "Parasomnia" with the intensity and joyous gusto of many of the greats in the genre such as Johnny Otis, Roy Milton, early Ike Turner or even Roomful of Blues. Vocally, Jones aims for the smooth style of Harry Connick, Jr., even if his pipes aren't quite up to the task. Still, he's obviously having such a blast that you can overlook some of the imperfections, especially when he lays into a stinging guitar lead. Certainly T-Bone Walker is an influence on his string bending, but so is Albert King and even Michael Bloomfield. Covers of Little Milton (who was due to guest on these sessions, but passed away before the dates), Jimmy McCracklin and Ray Charles (on a spirited "Hallelujah I Love Her So" with Newman guesting) don't distract from Jones' own tunes ...

| | Jesse Rivest Seventeen Oh-Two Oh-Six CD (2006)
Anathema CD music
$12.15 (Text from from Lucidforge review, 3 out of 5 stars)There’s a lot to enjoy on Seventeen Oh-Two Oh-Six. Each track is very different from the last, and in some places motifs are used to establish a different mood for each song; for example, “Crazy French Girl” has a distinctly Western-style theme. I was pretty impressed with what Rivest was able to do with only the help of his guitar; which is good, because there aren’t any other instruments in the mix, besides a tambourine on one track. It also appears that a lot of the songs were recorded in the same take, which isn’t surprising given the bold confidence Rivest displays with this recording.(Text from 2006 bio)If you converse with Jesse Rivest over a beer, he'll inadvertently lead you to believe that he's just a man with a flair for natural living - yet he won't call himself a hippie. You'd part with Jesse unaware of his talent as a singer, songwriter, and a fingerstyle/slide/groove guitarist. He's either modest or he does not yet realize that when he performs, people turn their heads and stop what they're doing to listen. In fact, Jesse has been slowly realizing his potential over many years. Raised in Stony Plain, Alberta, and Kelowna, British Columbia, he first picked up the guitar in 1991. Between then and 2004 he learned to rock, performing in cover bands ...
| | Death In December Beautiful Tragedy CD (2006)
Anathema music CDs
$15.19 tragedy, passion, anger, violence and hope are just a few of the many themes that drive the five heart filled members of death in december. For the past six years, blood sweat and tears were spilled into every song in hope of creating a revolution like no other. With honest, straightforward lyrics, driving guitars and catchy anthemic sing alongs, the Pocatello, ID based band has started a fire in the hearts of thousands. Having influences ranging from The Refused to Dashboard Confessional, Story of the Year to The Used, or even Underoath to Norma Jean, Death in December is bridging the gap between Hard Rock and Pop Punk. Vocalist Ryan Oliveira's powerful melodic singing and gut wrenching screaming evoke the pain, suffering and love in the emotional lyrics, which represent the true feeling of heartbreak and hope.Being unsigned and hailing out of a small suburban town is no easy tak, but after finding their sound and three new member D.I.D. is ready to take the world by storm. Already playing Vans Warped Tour, The Extreme Tour, the legendary Whisky and with hundreds of bands including The Used. AFI, Story of the Year, Glass jaw, Spoken, Poison the Well, Rancid, NHOI, Mest,Stavesacre, Simple Plan and Thursday is a huge stepping stone for the young band.In November of 2005 the guys took a road trip to record their full length album entitled "A Beautiful Tragedy" at DML Studios in San Diego, CA The album was mixed and mastered by legendary engineer Don Lithgow, who is ...
