Now Winter 2007 album
$15.18 Dream Theater's tenth long-player is about as dense and challenging as any album in the band's discography and emphasizes not only the virtuoso members' stupefying musicianship, but also their most aggressive and thoroughly metallic songwriting tendencies. The sixteen-minute opener "A Nightmare to Remember" quickly establishes this agenda via frequently thrash-paced staccato riffing, some of John Petrucci's most blistering guitar solos ever, and the return of drummer Mike Portnoy's syncopated growls, which provide contrast for singer James LaBrie's soaring melodic elegance. "The Count of Tuscany" is a heady prog-metal magnum opus brimming with more ideas, notes, and time changes over 19 minutes than ...

| | Voivod Infini CD (2009)
Now Winter 2007 music CDs
$11.98 Possibly more so than any other prior Voivod release, 2009's INFINITI is all about their late guitarist (and co-founding member) Piggy. Armed with guitar parts he recorded prior to his 2005 passing, the surviving Voivod members subsequently set out to finish off these final tracks. And musically, INFINITI really is a tribute of sorts to Voivod's fallen guitarist, as his playing propels many of the songs throughout ...

| | America Complete Greatest Hits CD (2001)
Now Winter 2007 CD music
$10.65 Principally recorded between 1972 and 1983. Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso.
Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch and Bill Inglot (DigiPrep).
America defined the soft-rock sound of the '70s. They wanted to be Crosby, Stills and Nash so badly that they figured out a way to not only pull it off, but beat CSN at their own game, logging even more hit singles than their chief inspiration. THE COMPLETE GREATEST HITS, true to its title, contains all those chart-toppers, as well as some songs that may be unfamiliar to the casual listener (if you weren't paying attention at the time, it's doubtful you'd recall the band's early-'80s comeback hit "You Can do Magic," for example).
While nobody's making a case for these easygoing popsters as bold innovators, even a cursory listen to this studiously compiled collection reveals a level of unassailable popcraft that places them on a par with posthumously lauded bands ...
| | Toby Lightman Little Things CD (2004)
Now Winter 2007 music CDs
$9.29 LITTLE THINGS, the confident debut from Toby Lightman, finds the New Jersey singer heavily under the influence of R&B and pop, and refreshingly devoid of the vocal tics and twirls beloved by some of her contemporaries. With a sound reminiscent of a poppier Norah Jones, Lightman is by turns seductive, innocent, and accusatory, backed by production that's supportive but not overly intrusive. This leaves plenty of room for her vocal talents to shine through on songs such as "Devils and Angels" and "The River."
She toughens up the light R&B of "Leave It Inside," but is sensitive enough to let the simple message of "Running Away" speak for itself without resorting to melodrama. This last track is a particular highlight, with Lightman's vocal framed by acoustic bass and guitar, proving that this talented young singer needn't restrict herself to a purely pop framework to be successful.
Recorded at Big Much Studios, New York, New York.
Personnel: Toby Lightman (vocals, acoustic guitar, programming); ...

$11.49 In it's eighth year, Leaping Lulu makes Celtic/Acoustic music with fiddle, guitar, concertina, flute, bodhran, piccolo, banjo, mandolin and vocals. Leaping Lulu pushes the envelope with their characteristic inventive, genre-bending dynamics and energetic arrangements. Their notoriety has taken them from the local music scene in Logan, Utah to include other such venues as the Sundance Film Festival and the Celtic Stew Irish music festival to name but a few. They have had the good fortune to open for Celtic harpist Patrick Ball and have even played dinner music for Eileen Ivers. They are especially well known for their annual 'Celtic Night' St. Patrick's Day production which they present in collaboration with Inishfre Irish Dance. Their music has been featured on ...
