| | Machan Motion Of Love CD Machan Discography of CDs
Machan has an attractive voice, writes light and catchy songs, and plays fine folksy guitar. Her original influences were Joni Mitchell and James Taylor, she was versatile enough to tour with the Glenn Miller ghost orchestra, and she has performed at a variety of sessions in the New York area. The music on her debut CD, Motion of Love, consists of ten of her originals. Although a little jazzy at times and boasting guest appearances from the likes of guitarist John Scofield, keyboardist John Medeski, and trumpeter Randy Brecker, this is essentially a modern pop album by a talented singer/songwriter. The lyrics are sometimes insightful, stretch beyond the usual love songs, and include a few fresh angles on contemporary life. Motion of Love is a fine start to Machan's solo career. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Nils Pacific Coast Highway CD (2005)
Motion Of Love CD music
$12.59 Although the veteran composer/guitarist's website could use a major update -- it is contemporary to 1998 -- he's right in the pocket of modern smooth jazz with his 2005 release. He comes with a solid pedigree in the genre, having recorded a duet with George Benson (who also once covered "Keep Rollin'," given a trippy-moody makeover here), and working with Rick Braun, Marcus Johnson and Gabriela Anders. But his all-star associations aren't as important as his facility for melody and groove, and he does well on both counts here, beginning with the bright, vibrant Norman Brown-like title track, playing it snappy and funky on "Back Pocket" and showing a more intimate side with "Coming Home." Lively, swinging breezy gems like "Cruisin'" show off a powerful ability to collaborate with some of the genre's best sidemen, including Abe Laboriel, Rob Mullins, Alex Acuńa and Paul Jackson, Jr., whose influence on the guitarist is apparent throughout the project. While he's solid as a writer of radio-friendly tunes, he includes a few covers for variety, one a throbbing twist on "You've Got a Friend," the other a much more eventful and interesting bluesy jam on Toto's minor hit "Georgy Porgy." Whether Nils can break through to the genre elite is up in the air, but he's certainly got some good material here to start him on his way. ~ Jonathan Widran

| | Gerald Albright New Beginnings CD (2006)
Motion Of Love music CDs
$13.55 Veteran smooth jazz saxophonist Gerald Albright is no one-dimensional purveyor of musical wallpaper--his excellent NEW BEGINNINGS collection is wide-ranging enough to cover a sultry version of "Georgia on My Mind" and a swaying, uptempo cover of the Whispers' disco-era hit "And the Beat Goes On." The pianist Patrice Rushen makes a guest appearance on the album's title track, and Albright's colleague Jeff Lorber performs on cuts including the velvety "We Got the Groove" and the sinuous "Take Your Time."
