(8 Customer Reviews)
The 17-year-old MC known as Sean Kingston got put on the 21st-century way--through his myspace page. On his impressive self-titled debut full-length, Kingston blends elements of contemporary R&B, dancehall reggae, and radio-friendly pop over 14 tracks, all the while flowing with hungry, upstart energy. The stand-out track and debut single, "Beautiful Girls," quickly became the summer jam of 2007, with its infectious beats and clever sampling of Ben E. King's classic "Stand By Me." The rest of the album's thump comes courtesy of West Coast producer J.R., and with a tracklist light on guest stars (Paula DeAnda, Vybz Kartel, and Kardinal Offishal), SEAN KINGSTON heralds the coming of an assured young artist brimming with potential.
Personnel: Sean Kingston (vocals); Jonathan "J.R." Rotem (various instruments); Mike Feingold (guitar); Lyrica Anderson (background vocals).
Additional personnel: Paula Deanda, Kardinal Offishall, Vybz Kartel (rap vocals).

Sean Kingston
$13.35 With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that expertly showcase Chamillionaire's deep, husky voice. The introductory title track is marked by machine-gun beats, and establishes the album's fierce, restless mood. But the disc's highlight is the utterly infectious single "Turn It Up," which boasts Scott Storch's distinctive chiming production and an appearance by Lil' Flip. Although fellow Texan Bun-B, ...
| | T-Pain Epiphany CD (2007)
Sean Kingston
$9.99 Rapper-turned-singer T-Pain occupies a genre all his own: "Hard & B" is how he describes it. On his sophomore album, EPIPHANY, the Tallahassee native follows the same formula that made his debut such a success--namely, shockingly hardcore lyrics normally reserved for the rap arena, cloaked in sweat and sensitive melodies. With a penchant for computerized vocal effects (much like his contemporary and label-boss Akon), T-Pain ups the ante on radio-friendly raunch with ...
| | Plies Real Testament CD (2007)
Sean Kingston
$10.45 Representing Fort Myers, Florida, the up-and-coming rapper known as Plies first made noise by penning the Snoop/Akon hit, "I Wanna Love You." After the unbridled success of his first single, "Shawty," Plies was geared up to drop a full-length of his own. With a molasses-thick Dirty South accent and a gang of stress on his chest, ...
| | Bobby "Blue" Bland His California Album CD (1973) (Import) United Kingdom
Sean Kingston
$17.15 Bland's first album for ABC-Dunhill was aptly titled. The players were the cream of the Los Angeles session scene (particularly bassist Wilton Felder and guitarist Larry Carlton), and backup singer Ginger Blake was a member of the legendary Brian Wilson-produced girl group the Honeys. Fortunately, all of them proved thoroughly sympathetic to Bland's brand of down-home blues, and the resulting album is neither overproduced nor slick. On the contrary, HIS CALIFORNIA ALBUM has a nice, late-night feel reminiscent of B.B. King's "The Thrill is Gone."
Bland, who's in exceptionally good voice here, simmers his way through some cover songs that suit his impassioned delivery to a T, including Gladys Knight's "I've Got to Use My Imagination," Luther Ingram's "I Don't Want to Be Right," and Gerry Goffin's "It's Not the Spotlight." The album's high point, however, is the opening "This Time I'm Gone for Good," a beautiful, modern soul-blues plaint sung by Bland with just the right amount of intensity and regret. "Six Degrees of Bobby Bland" trivia: Trip-hop folkie Beth Orton covered "Spotlight" on the soundtrack to the 1999 Kevin Bacon film A Stir of Echoes.
