Cosmicolor album
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first half is especially smooth, opening with the beautifully soft Neapolitan ballad "Ninna Nanna" and the title track, on which Forbes sings "I think we should take it slow" over swooping strings, brass, and piano that resurrect the glory days of AM pop; that feeling is echoed by the cover of Joe Raposo's "Sing," the Sesame Street song that gained popularity when the Carpenters performed it (Emilio Delgado, aka Sesame Street's Luis, duets with Forbes here in Spanish and English). ...

Cosmicolor songs
$11.19 MACARTHUR PARK goes beyond the famous hit title track to explore the recorded work of stage and screen actor Richard Harris, including his versions of "Paper Chase" and "Name Of My Sorrow."
This CD reissue from England is almost (but not quite) identical to Raven Records' Richard Harris: The Webb Sessions 1968-69 from Australia, combining the contents of the albums A Tramp Shining and The Yard Went on Forever. The difference is the absence of the last Richard Harris-Jimmy Webb collaboration, "One of the Nicer Things," which appeared as a free-standing single in 1969. Alan Hodgson's annotation is slightly less informative than the notes by Jimmy Webb on the Raven CD. On the other hand, this disc is also about $3-$5 cheaper, so budget-minded fans may appreciate it. As for the sound, it is superior to any of the LP versions of A Tramp Shining, with Webb's reliance on stereo separation for important timbral effects coming through bright and sharp throughout -- a small, muted string orchestra coming up opposite an electric guitar and bass on one song, an electric piano or harpsichord tinkling from one speaker, while a big-scale orchestra pumps out rich horn playing from ...
| | Claude Challe Buddha-Bar, Vol. II CDs
Cosmicolor album
$40.49 Claude Challe's Buddha-Bar, Vol. II compilation has elements of Far Eastern spirituality, African song, European electronica, and Spanish spice. The first album, Buddha-Bar, is very mellow for the most part. Deepak Chopra and Demi Moore, far and away the most recognizable names on the album, do a spoken word ditty on love and self-worth. People who are not fans of new age doctrine will appreciate artists such as Oliver Shanti and Consuelo Luz, both of whom contribute songs that manage to sound musical, spiritual and ethnic at once. The second album varies from hallucinatory to groovy to fairly high-energy. "Tears Inshalla" will appeal to fans of Eastern-influenced trance. Lyrics are of almost no importance on the album. They do exist on most tracks, but they bounce around from English to Portuguese to Arabic. Bits and pieces and snatches of phrases come through here and there -- just enough to make a listener feel in sync with it all. This music is intended to be an ambient journey, and while a few of the tracks seem to stray off into Never Never Land, the majority of them should appeal to fans of worldbeat. ~ L. Katz

| | Madviolet Worry The Jury CD Import; Digipak
Cosmicolor album
$24.65 Brenley and Lisa...Providence, destiny, karma, kismit: Call it what you will, there's an undiluted element of it in the Madviolet story. Brenley MacEachern and Lisa Marie MacIsaac use those terms when recounting how two small-town girls with shared Cape Breton roots hooked up in Toronto four years ago. That same certain something explains the series of happy breaks that led to working relationships with premier U.K. producer John Reynolds, Sinead O'Connor's backing band and Indigo Girls manager Russell Carter. And it's clearly alive in the camaraderie and connection the duo feel when writing together, performing live and racking up the miles in their beloved, anthropomorphosized tour vans (first Charlie, now the sleek, late-model Blanche).Whatever it is, it's ingrained deep in the musical DNA of Worry The Jury, Madviolet's debut full-length CD. Led by the rousing opening track and first single, "Light It Up," the album documents a six-week recording blitz in London, England that Brenley calls "absolutely magic, a dream creative experience."John Reynolds, best known for his central role on O'Connor's classic albums and whose dazzling C/V includes work with U2, Peter Gabriel and Simply Red, helmed the warm, intimate sessions at his Notting Hill home studio 18d (formerly Ghost Rooms). His close-knit circle of musicians - among them guitarist Jon Klein (Siouxsie and the Banshees) and bass players Claire Kenny (Indigo Girls) and Matthew Seligman (Tori Amos, The Soft Boys) - served as Madviolet's backing band. Vocal tracks were recorded in the same tiled bathroom where O'Connor sang "Fire On Babylon." Among the guests who dropped in for a taste of Reynold's post-session cooking was his neighbor Brian Eno."We got over being starstruck pretty quickly - it was such an everyday, down-to-earth atmosphere," explains Brenley, an equally earthy type raised in Kincardine, Ont. Not that there was any shortage of pinch-me moments. "One day I looked up from recording a part and theres Sinead sitting in a chair and listening," says Lisa, the youngest of Cape Breton's celebrated MacIsaac family of fiddle players and the quieter, charmingly sardonic one in Madviolet. "That was a bit freaky."Fate showed its hand long before Brenley first met Lisa in 2000 and invited her to join her trip-hop band zoebliss. It turned out that their fathers had known one another as teenagers back in Creignish, Nova Scotia. Lisa went to school ...
