In some ways the love child of Sade and Norah Jones, European sensation Ayo blends African pop and western soul influences into seductively mellow mood music. The daughter of a Nigerian father and a Romanian Gypsy mother born and raised in Germany, Ayo (whose name does mean "Joyful" in Yoruba) has a smoky voice and soulful delivery perfectly matched by the low simmer of jazzy arrangements built on African percussion, acoustic guitar, and old-fashioned funky organ grooves. Highlights include the passionate first single, "Down on My Knees."
2006 issued debut from the German born lady whose father was Nigerian and her mother a Gipsy. Her life has been spent in Germany, Africa, France, England and The U.S., though she calls Germany her place of residence. Producer Jay Newland assembled a band that acceeded to Ayo's every wish, producing these songs with flourishes of pidgin and recollections of gipsy life....both tributes to her parents. She draws musical inspriation from Donny Hathaway, Jimmy Cliff and 60's pop. The album was completed live in the studio in an amazing 5 day span! The result is a collection of bittersweet songs dotted by her personal experiences as well as those by people she's encountered along the way.

This 1991 followup to 1987's successful CANCIONES DE MI PADRE continues Linda Ronstadt's innovative musical exploration of her roots. Once again, producer and arranger Ruben Fuentes is on hand to provide authentic orchestral accompaniment to classic Mexican songs handpicked by Linda and her brothers, who sing together as a trio on several tracks. The orchestra is also bit smaller this time, which perhaps accounts for Ronstadt's greater confidence in presenting this delightful material. What strikes the listener again is how different Ronstadt sounds performing this material. She swoops and sways and twists her syllables like a native, while manifesting a highly expressive sob never heard when she sings in English.

It will surprise many people to learn that Jane Russell, the glamorous Hollywood sex symbol could sing, and this CD is proof of her versatility! Although she recorded quite regularly throughout the late 1940s and the 1950s her singing ability was always overshadowed by her sultry sexy film star image. However the singing heard in films like “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, “Gentlemen Marry Brunettes”, “Montana Belle” and “The French Line” was hers and not dubbed. Like her cinema fun image, the 21 songs featured here are naughty and slightly suggestive but tame in today’s climate.
