Luther Russell's opening cut on Repair -- "Rise and Shine" -- bounces about like a happy bit of '70s pop, the perfect summer song for cruising country roads in one's convertible. The lyrics are profoundly simple, espousing an appreciation for sunny days and a commitment to love. The choruses guarantee the listener's attention, kicking the effervescent mood into high gear. "Everybody Falls," as one might guess from the title, is also about love, or the failure of love. The arrangement, acoustic guitars and strings, and mid-tempo pacing generates a melancholy mood, a sad pretty song. Both songs are gifts of a kind, tracks that flow effortlessly, though obviously each are the result of careful effort on Russell and his collaborators' part. The downside is that these early cuts are difficult to live up to on Repair, and no matter how good the remainder of the material may be, frontloading tracks handicaps the rest of the album. On the fourth track, "Blinking Star," Russell sounds like a more familiar singer/songwriter, supporting the words with an alternative country wrapping. "My Own Blood" reverts to a structure reminiscent to the opening track, though without a worthy chorus to bring it together. Repair's early tracks reveal Russell as a formidable talent, but the latter tracks stand in the shadow of "Rise and Shine" and "Everybody Falls." ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Uncut (p.93) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Russell's puppy-dog genuineness and the emphatically understated playing and production of Ethan Johns keeps things righteously real throughout." No Depression (p.104) - "'Lightning Strikes' is a moving ballad that out of nowhere delivers a walloping finish with giant chiming guitar chords and an irresistible chorus." The Word (magazine) (p.109) - "Written following Russell's divorce, the sombreness of the lyrics is frequently buffeted by crisp, sprightly melodies and cheery power-pop refrains....There are undeniable shades of Elliot Smith and Ryan Adams here, but Russell is evidently in possession of a style all his own..." $19.10 "Rocky Mountain Way," the tune that opens Joe Walsh's sophomore release (and remains one of his best-known songs), is a textbook example of Walsh's strengths. The song is driven by a slinky hard rock groove that boasts crunchy, distorted guitars, barrelhouse piano, wiry solos, and a ...

$19.98 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 tracks, which is eight cuts longer than Springsteen's box, plenty ...

| | Beyonce I Am...Sasha Fierce CD (2008) Bonus Track; Deluxe Edition
Repair CD music
$9.99 I AM. SASHA FIERCE represents another change of pace for Beyoncé. Unlike the relatively streamlined, retro-soul inflected B'DAY, I AM... is a sprawling two-disc set designed to reflect two conflicting sides of Beyoncé's musical personality. The first disc sports reflective, sometimes moody ballads, while the second, attributed to Beyoncé's brash alter ego, Sasha Fierce, is loaded with propulsive dance-floor fillers. Except for this stylistic divide, I AM. pays only nominal attention to its supposed concept, focusing instead on a set of excellent, radio-ready songs--neatly avoiding the possibility of I AM. becoming some sort of Chris Gaines-style conceptual disaster. Though the second disc, which boasts the synth-drenched lead single, "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)," is more immediately gratifying, ...
| | Hossein Alizadeh Neynava/Song Of Compassion CD (1995)
Repair music CDs
$13.15 concerto for ney (cane flute) and string orchestra, by Iranian master musician
NeyNava and Song of Compassion are two pieces by leading Persian composer Hossein Alizadeh that have little in common except that 1. both are about half the length of a CD and 2. both are beautiful. NeyNava (written 1983) is a concerto for the ney, which is the breathy Middle Eastern flute, and a Western string orchestra. It represents a meeting of East and West, not only in the instruments but in the writing: traditional Middle Eastern music does not use harmony or counterpoint but instead relies on the very complex and usually improvised development of melodic figures for its interest. In NeyNava Alizadeh has attempted to work out an explicit harmony based on the intervals of those traditional Persian figures. The experiment is an undeniable success. While the strings sound at moments like a number of Western composers -- Rimsky-Korsakoff, Vaughan Williams, and Shostakovich, to name a few -- they do not so consistently resemble any single one of them as to be accused of being derivative. And the strings dovetail with the rich timbre of the ney to create a mood that is foreboding yet large-souled. While most of the piece is on the slow and dreamy side, it closes with a movement entitled "Sufi Dance" that is more sprightly and which weaves the fascinating texture of two neys together with bold gestures from the strings. With ...
