(3 Customer Reviews)
Saxophonist Candy Dulfer doesn't shy away from a hard groove. "Candy," the kick-off track to the artist's 2007 release CANDY STORE is a case in point, as is "Music = Love." When not fronting a funky jam, Dulfer dips into smooth jazz ("L.A. City Lights"), Latin-tinged beats ("La Cabana"), and smoky noir ("Soul Sax"). There aren't any left-field surprises here, only light, groove-centered, mainstream jazz, but Dulfer's sweet but authoritative style and the quality of her personnel make CANDY STORE a treat.
Additional Tracks
Personnel: Candy Dulfer (alto saxophone); Janvan Duiheren (trumpet); Louk Boudesteijn (trombone); Manuel Hugas, Ulco Bed (bass guitar); Kasper Van Kooten, John Blackwell (drums); Brainpower (scratches); Trijntje Oosterhuis, Chance Howard (background vocals).
JazzTimes (p.85) - "As the title riffs on, there's an assortment of confections -- alternately sweet, funky, nasty and never stale -- that proves how Dulfer does pop-jazz her own way." | | Euge Groove Just Feels Right CD (2005)
Candy Store CD music
$11.29 The sophomore release on Narada's jazz imprint for Tower of Power's former saxman Euge Groove, Just Feels Right is an attempt to return to the music of 1976. The groove is the key to the whole, with a mix of funk, smooth jazz, and what almost sounds like quiet storm popping in from time to time. The album was made with a vintage ethic, using almost no gear made after 1976. The session musicians, as well, are from a different age, taking time to perfect the groove and lay out a nice backing rhythm. The compositions aren't particularly adventurous, but that's not really their purpose either. What they are is generally relaxed, simple works. The string arrangements can go a bit over the top at times, in full Love Unlimited Orchestra-style, but for the most part they hang back with a soft touch on the Hammond and all is well. A perfect album for a quiet groove ...
| | Paul Brown White Sand CD (2007)
Candy Store music CDs
$14.49 Smooth jazz producer, arranger, and songwriter Paul Brown made the transition to recording artist with 2004's Up Front, which, like its successor, 2005's The City, was a Top Ten hit on the Contemporary Jazz chart. With a switch from GRP to Peak Records, Brown should continue his popular ways with his third solo album White Sand. He has enlisted more guests than usual this time, to the point that the disc is practically one of those "and friends" duets collections. Al Jarreau sings on "Make Me Feel So Good," Bobby Caldwell on a cover of "Mercy Mercy Mercy," and Lina on a cover of "I Say a Little Prayer." Among the star instrumentalists, Boney James is heard on "Ol' Skoolin'," David Benoit on "R 'n' B Bump," Euge Groove on "More or Less Paul," Rick Braun on "Mr. Cool," and saxophone newcomer Jessy J on the title track. The guests simply augment the contributions of the leader, however; Brown's guitar is a dominant instrument, and he has a vocal on a cover of "For What It's Worth." As the familiar titles indicate, he has taken inspiration from the '60s, but his rhythm tracks often have a current hip-hop sound, and the well-known lyrics and melodies will only serve ...
| | Euge Groove Born 2 Groove CD (2007)
Candy Store songs
$11.05 After searching for a more inspired way to indulge his chart-topping contemporary jazz sound, saxophonist/composer/arranger Euge Groove has created his most personal statement to date as an artist. On Born 2 Groove, the versatile saxophonist surrounds himself with an array of masterful gospel musicians who speak a completely different musical language. The result is ten brand new tracks, seven of which were recorded completely live. With special guest appearances by the great Jeffrey Osborne on "Baby If You Only Knew (What I Could Do)" and former Temptations lead singer Ali "Ollie" Woodson on "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," Groove should also gain even more appreciation for his musical interpretations from his ever-increasing R&B fan base. The song's themes range from the gently playful and laid-back feeling heard on the opening track "A Summer's Night Dream" to the beautiful Italian inspired imagery inherent in "Café del Soul" to the spiritual essence of "Religify." ...
| | Rick Braun RNR CD (2007)
Candy Store album
$13.05 When Rick Braun and Richard Elliot formed their contemporary jazz record label, it was a sure bet that the sights and sounds heard from it would be designed to entertain and amaze the legions of fans who have followed their careers since Braun's days with War and Elliot's days with Tower of Power. This revelation is clearly emphasized on their first label collaboration, titled RnR. The music here is stylistically different from the songs they played back in the '70s, yet it flows from their collective musical minds like a natural extension with the same elements of spontaneity, soul, and sex appeal. Each tune is based on a particular rhythmical feel or texture: shuffle, boogaloo, Latin, funk, even 20th century cool and bebop colors. Opening with the title track, "RnR," the ensemble delivers an energetic jam filled with potent beats and horn charts that smoke in unison. "Sweet ...

Candy Store music CDs
$11.15 The second of two long-overdue recordings by the Tonight Show Band has its moments, but its reliance on swing-era warhorses and the generally predictable arrangements (Bill Holman's reworkings of "The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise," "Take the 'A' Train," and "Serenade in Blue" are exceptions) are disappointments. However, there is some excellent solo space for trumpeters ...
