| | Patrick Park Everyone's In Everyone CD Patrick Park Discography of CDs
The previous albums by Colorado-born, Los Angeles-based neo-folkie singer/songwriter Patrick Park have been promising but spotty, but coming nearly four years after 2003's Loneliness Knows My Name, the far more self-assured Everyone's in Everyone is a big step forward. Opening with the immediately engaging solo voice and guitar tune "Life Is a Song," Everyone's in Everyone moves from strength to strength. Highlights include the genuinely great "Here We Are," a propulsive country-rocker in the vintage '70s Laurel Canyon style that features a strong, memorable chorus, and the moodier, mysterious "Saint with a Fever," which mines territory closer to vintage Richard Thompson. There isn't a single duff track on this concise 11-song album, which seems destined to put Park alongside Josh Ritter and Josh Rouse in the top tier of American folk-rock singer/songwriters. ~ Stewart Mason

Everyone's In Everyone album
$5.25 Christmas music releases have become a country music tradition, but the result is often generic mushy background instrumentation on the same moldy standards. Guilty of this is Vince Gill, whose Let There Be Peace on Earth is as cliche-ridden as they come. ~ Roch Parisien

Everyone's In Everyone songs
$9.25 A classic modern country album, THE TRIO is as pretty as music gets. The ethereal harmony vocals of three of popular music's sweetest swingers, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, would be enough--their harmonies couldn't have been closer if they were triplets. But THE TRIO offers something more, gathering songs that not only utilize their natural singing talents but also bring out the emotional timbre of their collective voice.
From the ultra-pretty Phil Spector pop classic "To Know Him Is To Love Him" to the hard-country Jimmie Rodgers song "Hobo's Meditation" and the high-lonesome "Memories Of You," THE TRIO brims with musicality. There are several traditional songs, a folk song written by Jean Ritchie, the spine-tingling gospel standard "Farther Along" and some strong Dolly Parton originals. On "Telling Me Lies," written by Linda Thompson, Linda Ronstadt delivers one of her most controlled performances ever.

| | Christmas With The New Christy Minstrels: Complete! CD (2001)
Everyone's In Everyone album
$14.35 Christmas With the New Christy Minstrels: Complete! offers not one, but two albums by the group of the same name. Interestingly, because of a number of personnel changes, none of the members present for Merry Christmas! in 1963 remained with the group in 1966 when Christmas With the Christies was recorded. While the group has been eclipsed by Peter, Paul, and Mary over time, the New Christy Minstrels' star shone as bright as any folk group in the mid-'60s. The group carved out a unique choral sound, achieved with the help of nine members. When the Christies combined complex arrangements with several talented lead singers on songs like "Beautiful City" and "Tell It on the Mountain," they created a rich tapestry of sound. With nine singers, only the most ardent fans know that the group was the brainchild of Randy Sparks, or that Nick Woods and Art Podell handled the arrangements on the early albums. The bottom line to most fans was how good the group sounded on songs like "The Shepherd Boy" and "Parson Brown." In fact, quite a few people consider Merry Christmas! to be the group's best album and have been listening to scratchy copies of the LP for over 25 Christmases. If this album shines less brightly, it has something to do with the more formalized arrangements and pop production. The New Christy Minstrels, like many folk groups, ...

| | Ol' Paint CD (1971)
Everyone's In Everyone CD music
$14.19 Ol' Paint's first and only album, released in 1971, suggests what might have happened if a tuneful country-rock band had heard Big Star's #1 Record and decided to try something similar. Of course, clever pop enthusiasts will recall that Big Star's debut didn't arrive until 1972, and while the utter obscurity of this album would make it unlikely that Alex Chilton and company took any cues from Ol' Paint, at the very least the two bands sound like kindred spirits of smart pop in an era when such things were in short supply. Ol' Paint had a pair of fine tunesmiths in lead vocalist Tony Caputo and guitarist Andy Mendelson, and both bring some fine melodies and full-bodied melodic hooks to the table, but unfortunately neither was an especially compelling lyricist (the pretentious "Victims of the Sex Revolution" is a cringe-worthy low point), and while Big Star clearly took their cues from the Beatles, there are a few moments on Ol' Paint where it's hard not to feel they'd been listening to more Emitt Rhodes than Paul McCartney (not a bad thing in and of itself). Brief flashes of prog rock also flow through Ol' Paint's formula, and "Up from the Sea" and "Mogitah" probably turned off any Beatles obsessives looking ...
