Guitarist Dave Mustaine was an original member of thrash-pioneers Metallica. But he was booted from the band during the recording of that band's debut album, KILL 'EM ALL. Instead of moping around, Mustaine returned to California and immediately formed another group--Megadeth. He promised his fans that the new outfit would be faster and more lethal than his former band, and Megadeth's 1985 debut, KILLING IS MY BUSINESS, AND BUSINESS IS GOOD, made good on this threat. Had it been released immediately after it was recorded in 1984, Exodus' Bonded by Blood might be regarded today alongside Metallica's Kill 'em All as one of the landmark albums responsible for launching the thrash metal wave. But by the time it finally hit the streets more than a year later due to numerous record company-related difficulties, the genre the band helped spawn had evolved at an alarming rate (again, largely thanks to the unstoppable Metallica) and Exodus were left to wonder what kind of impact they may have had without these setbacks. Tracey Chapman's sixth album continues her tradition of immaculately crafted, self-effacing, deceptively low-key songs that consistently get to the root of things. That the most commercial track here ("Say Hallelujah") is about a funeral speaks volumes about Chapman's songwriting approach. "The bucket is kicked/The body is gone" she sings prosaically; "Eternal rest for the weary/Mourners party tonight." It's a catchy song that manages to retain its optimism despite its mortal subject.
