You Are There
$12.69 The accomplished jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton interprets a variety of songs on the subject of happiness on this subtle, nuanced set. Unique readings of standards such as "Happy Days Are Here Again," presented here in upbeat and more muted versions, a somber, minor key "You Are My Sunshine," and a masterful, rhythmically complex arrangement of "I Want ...
| | Deborah Cox Destination Moon CD (2007)
You Are There
$11.45 Cox borrows songs from across Washington's oeuvre and, with the help of top-shelf arranger Rob Mounsey, takes them for a heartfelt test drive. Naturally, Washington classics like "What a Difference a Day Makes" and "This Bitter Earth" sound quite different with Cox on the mic--her clean, elastic voice is almost the polar opposite of Washington's textured tone--but the album is elegantly assembled and makes for a compelling listen for Cox and Washington fans alike.
Contemporary R&B singer Deborah Cox mixed things up a bit with her 2007 release, DESTINATION MOON. Instead of the artist's usual commercially tailored dance-pop, DESTINATION MOON is a tip of the hat to old-school legend Dinah Washington. Cox claims to be deeply influenced by Washington, and a fan since she was a young girl.

| | Irvin Mayfield Love Songs, Ballads And Standards CD (2008)
You Are There
$12.59 A case study in how disparate generations can be united by a love of music, LOVE SONGS, BALLADS AND STANDARDS finds young-lion trumpeter Irvin Mayfield joining forces with elder-statesman pianist Ellis Marsalis. New Orleans natives both, Mayfield and Marsalis honor their city and the jazz tradition on this collection of standbys ("In a Sentimental Mood," "Round Midnight") and contemporary pop (Norah Jones's "Don't Know Why"). Mayfield lost his father in Hurricane Katrina (along with the original tapes for this album), and a sense of loss and mournfulness informs ...
| | Patricia Barber Cole Porter Mix CD (2008)
You Are There
$15.05 Pianist and vocalist Patricia Barber has been both criticized and lauded for her unconventional approach to jazz. While cutting a record of standards entitled THE COLE PORTER MIX may seem like Barber's bid for mainstream acceptance, it is anything but. Instead, the artist takes well-worn Porter tunes like "Easy to Love," "I Get a Kick Out of You," and "In the Still of the Night" and deconstructs ...
