| | Deborah Cox Destination Moon CD (2007)
You Are There CD music
$10.79 Contemporary R&B singer Deborah Cox mixed things up a bit with her 2007 release, DESTINATION MOON. Instead of the artist's usual commercially tailored dance-pop, DESTINATION MOON is a tip of the hat to old-school legend Dinah Washington. Cox claims to be deeply influenced by Washington, and a fan since she was a young girl.
Cox borrows songs from across Washington's oeuvre and, with the help of top-shelf arranger Rob Mounsey, takes them for a heartfelt test drive. Naturally, Washington classics like "What a Difference a Day Makes" and "This Bitter Earth" sound quite different with Cox on the mic--her clean, elastic voice is almost the polar opposite of Washington's textured tone--but the album is elegantly assembled and makes for a compelling listen for Cox and Washington fans alike.

Photographer: Joanne Savio.
Arranger: Rob Mounsey.
Personnel: Deborah Cox (background vocals); Deborah Cox; Semyon Fridman, Jeanne LeBlanc, Richard Locker, Clay Ruede (cello); Liz Mann (flute); Marc Phaneuf (alto saxophone); Jeff Nelson & Covenant, ...
| | Jackie Ryan You And The Night And The Music CD (2007)
You Are There music CDs
$13.25 Jackie Ryan is a talented jazz singer who has a strong, attractive voice and a subtle improvising style. On her third recording, she is heard in prime form interacting with the great tenor saxophonist Red Holloway (who is on five of the 14 selections) and some of Los Angeles' top musicians. The instrumentation changes from track to track with Ryan excelling on tender duets with harpist Carol Robbins ("You Are There") and guitarist Larry Koonse ("While We're Young"). She swings hard on "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," puts plenty of feeling into "Besame Mucho" and sounds joyful on "I Just Found out About Love." No matter the setting or the mood expressed, Ryan shows that she is a force to be reckoned with. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Irvin Mayfield Love Songs, Ballads And Standards CD (2008)
You Are There songs
$12.59 A case study in how disparate generations can be united by a love of music, LOVE SONGS, BALLADS AND STANDARDS finds young-lion trumpeter Irvin Mayfield joining forces with elder-statesman pianist Ellis Marsalis. New Orleans natives both, Mayfield and Marsalis honor their city and the jazz tradition on this collection of standbys ("In a Sentimental Mood," "Round Midnight") and contemporary pop (Norah Jones's "Don't ...
| | Roy Hargrove Earfood CD (2008)
You Are There album
$9.69 Trumpeter Roy Hargrove emerged in the 1980's jazz scene as something of a protégé of Wynton Marsalis. EARFOOD is Hargrove's debut for the reactivated Emarcy imprint, and here he balances a reverence for classic jazz (hard bop and soul jazz, specifically) with a yearning for a larger audience. With 13 selections, both originals and choice covers, Hargrove's quintet opts for a sleek, direct approach--solos are terse and spirited, the melodies engagingly catchy in the manner of Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock, and Hugh Masekela. EARFOOD is earnest, straight-ahead jazz, loaded with smarts, swing, and soul.
2008 album recorded by Roy's working quintet, playing a repertoire consisting of songs they play live while on tour, mixed in with a few new originals. ...

| | Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band Clarke-Boland Big Band CD (1992) (Import) United Kingdom
You Are There music CDs
$11.29 Kenny Clarke-Francy Bolland Big Band: Kenny Clarke (drums); Francy Bolland (piano); Derek Humble (alto saxophone); Carl Drevo, Billy Mitchell, Ronnie Scott (tenor saxophone); Sahib Shihab (baritone saxophone, flute); Benny Bailey, Roger Guerin, Jimmy Deuchar, Ahmed Muvaffak Falay, Idrees Sulieman, Edmund Falay (trumpet); Ake Persson, Nat Peck, Erich Keinschuster, Raymond Katarsynski, Frederic "Keg" Jonson (trombone); Jimmy Woode (bass); Joe Harris (tympani); Sadi (bongos).
One of the great jazz orchestras of the 1960s and '70s -- and one rarely heard, either live or on record, in the United States -- was the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band. This overseas group (which was equally filled with Americans and Europeans) was a hard-swinging modern mainstream ensemble, analogous in ways to Rob McConnell's Boss Brass of the 1980s and '90s. This double-CD set (which was put out in 1992 but not made available in the U.S. until 1995) has a particularly exciting live concert performance by the big band. Overflowing with soloists (including trumpeters Benny Bailey, Art Farmer, and Idrees Sulieman, trombonist Ake Persson, and a sax section comprised of Derek Humble, Johnny Griffin, Sahib Shihab, Tony Coe, and Ronnie Scott), the band ...
